Ferguson TE20 - Hydraulic operation

I am looking at buying a petrol Ferguson TE20. I do not know much about them so have found a couple of things a little odd about the workings of the hydraulic lift. This tractor requires the PTO engaged and running to raise the hydraulic lift. Is this normal? Secondly when operating it only appears to have two positions, all the way up or all the way down. Again is this normal?
These 2 items make it somewhat dangerous when using a slasher/mower. Can anyone give me some advice?

It is normal operation. The PTO drives the hydraulic pump. The tractors of this era did not have Live hydraulics (seperate operation) That is normal.

The lift height should be variable. Only up or only down is not normal. However, slight drifting from a set position can happen. Position control is an easy after market item that can be added.

Jeff,

I am confused with your post.

Only up or only down is not normal. However, slight drifting from a set position can happen. Position control is an easy after market item that can be added.

If the first sentence is true why would I need an after market position control?

Thanks for your help.

The early Ferguson systems (Prior to the inclusion of the quadramatic control) did not have position control. Position control is a feedback loop in the control system that keeps a non-ground engaging implement at a given set height.

Now a properly working early system you should be able to raise an implement to any individual height and stop it there... however over time the implement may drift... up or down a little. This happens as a function of how close you can put the control to a true neutral position. And as a mortal being you will never hit it dead on. Thus over time (1 minute or 20 minutes) the implement heigh may drift.

I read the origional post as the person had the concern that the lift was only all the way up or all the way down.

Does that help?
Jeff
