TO-30 with no fire from the coil. I was driving the tractor and stopped to change the blade angle, went to start it and it never started. Checked out the plugs, no fire, turned on the ignition and tried to spark the coil wire to ground and no fire. 12-volt w/resistor attached. Can I just use a 12-volt coil and get rid of the resistor thing before the coil?

If you have a 12 V system and a 12 V coil, you don't need a resistor. The resistance is built into the 12 V coil. Check for continuity in the ignition primary circuit including the key switch and the resistor that you said you had. My hunch is that you have an open primary circuit. By all means, make sure that you have the points set right, though. These old tractors are straight forward and simple but you have to have clean connections, etc just like any other spark ignition engine.

Had the same problem, found the ign. switch to be the problem.

Well it is remotely possible that both coils are bad but more likely it is points and/or condensor. Try putting a trouble light on the distributor side of the coil and the other end to the block. As you crank the engine the light should flash off and on if contacts are working and condensor is not shorted.

Put a 12-volt coil from another fergie on it and it ran for 2 seconds. No fire again. Any help???

I just got a Kubota to replace these money pits and they need to run for at least a week before something else happens so I can sell them to some poor sucker like me.

Everytime I run one it costs me $50. I'm sick of them.

These tractors can be reliable. I stuck with the six volt system because it is so simple and never gives me any of the problems people seem to have with 12 volt conversions. I know a 12 volt conversion can be done right and work good, but it does introduce problems for some people. When I bought my fergy the first thing I did was completely rewire it, went through the carb, new points cap etc.. adjusted everything by the book and now have been using it trouble free for 4 years now. If you are having ignition problems, get a meter and go through the system and test everything, you’ll find the problem. Check for bad connections. Just the other day I couldn’t get the engine to run in an old Wheel Horse lawn mower I am resurrecting…had twelve volts to the coil, points/condenser tested ok but couldn’t get a consistent spark. Found out that although I was reading 12 volts at the coil, it didn’t have enough amps to get the job done. There was a wiring connection to the ignition switch that was hanging by a thread. Fixed that and away it went.

NCtim;

Dont get too disgusted with the fergie. My TO-30 wasnt running too smooth and I was giving it the old evil eye and decided to replace the ignition switch. That fixed it.

 Thanks, Guys! in reply to steveormary, 07-26-2005 09:19:40
Thanks, Guys. I was feeling pretty frustrated last night. I love my Fergies, just not when I need them and they don't run or stop in the middle of a field, out of reach of battery chargers, etc.

I bought a new 6-volt coil and condensor today. I'll check the switch, although it's only a couple of months old.
