The MF dealer said this was the right thermostat, but it doesn't look like the one in the shop manual... look familiar? If it's the right one which end of the hose does it go in?

Still having a problem with overheating and doing the R&R one by one...

Thanks in advance!

I just bought one just like you did from the MF dealer and didn't think it would fit my upper radiator hose either. I put some grease on the thermostat and in the hose to make it go in easier. I then found a piece of pipe the same size as the outer edge of the thermostat, beveled the end of the pipe a little on the grinding wheel and pushed it in by hand. You could also use a socket the same diameter. Hope this helps.

When you get the right one, it goes in the end of the hose nearest the engine (I think that was your question). Others already told you which way the thermostat points (which may have been an implied question). I have found that my MF dealer is very poor at providing the proper parts for my Fergies. I get great service from New Holland for my Ford NAA, but MF service is terrible. They act like they know everything and then they sell you the wrong part. The NH people are patient and they get it right, at least in my neck of the woods.

Yes, thank you that was my question! There was no thermostat in the hose so I didn't know which end to put it in (There was no oil filter either!); the thermostat has no markings regarding direction of installation either, so I appreciate all the comments in that regard.

At least I know the thermostat wasn't the cause of overheating. Today I'm going to pick up a temp gauge for an NAA as someone recommended, and put both in this weekend and flush the radiator. I'm getting the temp guage and bulb kit at the Ford/N.H. dealer, who has been very helpful so far; but so has the MF dealer, so I guess I can count my blessings!

your experience with Agco and N.H. dealers is exactly the same as mine!

I get N.H. parts whenever I can, they treat me like a serious customer and they usually have what I'm looking for in stock.

I think the Agco guys would be more responsive if we were buying parts for one of those new, shiny, expensive combines rather than our old grey (still shiny though) TO's.

Your picture is identical to the first one I bought for my TO30, but that style will not fit in the radiator hose. The inside diameter of the hose is exactly the diameter of the barrel of the new thermostat you"ve got, but the thin flange around the center of the "stat will not fit in the hose. I had to hunt around until I found one that looks like the one that gshadel linked to.

I sent a teenager with a $20 bill to pick up the thermostat and a 7lb radiator cap and something for gas, so I guess it cost me 20 for both... didn't get a receipt and forgot the actual breakdown.

Key words here "Sent Teenager" if you sent $40 guess what it would have cost... :)

Yup, should work fine, looks the same as a lot of N thermos, like the picture I posted here from the Parts and Pieces tab. The thermo I installed a couple years back in my TO looks like the one in this link below. They all work the same.

Look real close on your new thermo, should have an arrow, or "RAD" stamped on it some where to help you orient it correctly. Coolant flows from the top engine manifold, thru the thermo, into the radiator.
If no markings, the general rule of thumb is the pointy end with coily wire, points towards the radiator for most thermo designs.

The "pointy end with wire coil" must face the engine. That"s the end containing the wax cylinder that opens the valve.
