how much do you guys have in your actual rebuild? how much and where can a long or short block be purchased? the fergy is getting close to its last leg!!! it is a working tractor, i use it to mow every week and for dirt work from time to time, i am leaning more towards a reman for this reason, thanks, chris

Seems like a lot of money spent on reman-engines you can almost buy a replacement tractor for that.I did both of mine(to-30 and 202 backhoe)cost really depends on what needs replacing. On my TO I did sleeves, pistons bearings and rod bushings and spent around $500 give or take. On my 202 There was a little more to it after redoing everything top to bottom I think it was closer to $1000. There is some costs to be saved if you have more time than money. Then again if you have more money than time reman-engine is the way to go

I replaced my TO-30 engine with a remanufactured short block and it cost $1485 back in 2001. One of the problems that you find on these old machines is that as you disassemble them to do the piston rings and mains, you start to find other problems that will necessitate machine shop work. If you have a lot of time,(and $'s), you can fix everything a piece at a time. My tractor is a working tractor and I felt I'd be better off with a remanufactured engine because I couldn't afford the down time. While you are redoing the engine, don't forget things like the distributor. Mine wore out after only being 50 years old! You might want to check that also because when the bushing and the shaft wear, even a new engine will run like a three legged dog.
Good luck on whatever you decide to do.

I got my from Farmland Tractor in Oregon while I was living near Seattle. I don't know where you live but you might try a Google search for "remanufactured tractor engines" and see what comes up. You can also try your local auto machines shops. Most of remanufactured engines are furnaced brazed for any cracks and then align bored, etc so the block is stress relieved and remachined.

I'm sure I spent way too much money when I did mine. Never added-up the total cost... I was afraid to see the final number. I know the wife sure was complaining everytime I said I needed more tractor parts. I got a little carried away though, ended up replacing the clutch, stripping and painting the whole tractor, and doing other stuff that probably didn't need done because I was having so much fun!

Check the prices of the rebuild kits on this site on the "tractor parts" tab on the left to get a good idea of the basic costs.

I don't know anything about remanufactured engines, but I thought I saw some on a web site once, and the prices seemed high, like ~$1200 or something like that. You can rebuild your TO engine 2-3 times at that price... unless you run into severe problems like a cracked block, etc.

Doing your own work is not a problem. I know next to nothing and I"ve been rebuilding a 1955 TO-35 that has sat in a field since 1984.

Everything is so so simple and advice on this site is plentiful. It is getting expensive ordering parts but I"m having a ton of fun. Of course, it still isn"t running...
