I ifnally got around to pulling my engine and tearing it down, i pulled out the liners and can find no evidence of seals ever being under the liners. Is it possible it ran for over 30 years since the last tear down with no seals under the liners >?

I would say no it isn't, the liners seals are gaskets in the shape of a figure eight and not very thick to start with (.016") this makes the liners stand proud of the block about.008" The cylinders are in pairs hence the gaskets being shaped like an eight (two cylinders side by side)
You don't say what bore the engine is....80mm or 85mm, not as it matters really they both look the same, just more powerful.

The liners were flush with the deck so thats one reason I had to open it up, it was an 80mm I want to put in 85mm liners, once I get the crank back I will know what size bearings to order and hopefully can put it all back together again.

If you wish to fit 85mm bore liners you will need to bore the block to accept them. It does happen that the liners can sink very low and it then requires new gaskets to be fitted, but it will have had gaskets fitted originally. I think I gave you the specs. for the liners to stand proud of the block, if I didn't just ask me again. While you are overhauling the engine check the camshaft bearings to see if they are worn, in particular the rear one, if this is worn it can stop enough lube going up to the valve gear and due to leakage may also give you a false pressure reading on the gauge. If the Camshaft bearings are worn they will need bushes fitted and then bored in-line to accept the camshaft. Take this opportunity to replace the rotor assy. in the oil pump too.

John, isn't it possible to get new bushings for the camshaft that is premade and just put them in and put the camshaft in after ?

Bill

Hi Bill, well it WAS possible at one time, but I have not seen or heard of any for a long time. But you still have to get any bushes line bored even if you can get new bushes, to make sure that the bushes are true in the block and that the camshaft will fit in easily and not either tighten up or be slack when it runs. The clearances on these bushes are small, so it has to be right, hence the line boring.
