Just found this post after searching for possible causes for my 30 to behave in similar fashion. I have gone through the process of elimination ( i.e.; dist., coil, resistor, wiring etc. ) to determine why mine will run OK at first start with the exception that it sputters (slightly like) constantly. After a good workout it begins to pop and sputter hard and loses power til it dies outright. It will restart but still sputter and pop and will not go one foot til it dies again. Are these also signs of a bad or burned valve? I have not gone through the carb yet as it appears to be an after market and not the original MS. A kit would probably be non-existent.

Could be excess carbon in cylinders. My TO30 did the same thing and I ignored it for a while. Later I created another carbon problem and had to decarbonize. Funny thing, afterwards previous problem also went away. I haven"t figured how to link to the archives yet, but do a search for my screen name (not many posts yet) and look at the suggestion for using water spray to decarbonize when I had my problem. Worked like a champ.

Just found that link. Here is a copy of the solution I used from:

"I"m sure there will be some who will disagree with me. Several times over the years I have cleaned the carbon out of engines this way with on harm to the engine. With the engine at operating temp., remove the air inlet hose to the carb. and with the engine at fast idle, slowly squirt some water into the carb. using a spray bottle. The water breaks the carbon loose and sends it out the tail pipe. Be sure to let the engine run a little while to dry all of the moisture out of the cylinders."

Ray reminded me of this method. It does work. I used about a pint of water all together.

Could be a badly adjusted valve or a burned valve.

I agree with Jerry. This sounds like tight valve lash adjustment. The clearance is adequate when the engine is cold, but when it reaches operating temperature the clearance is reduced. Another symptom may be hard starting. If carbon buildup was the culprit the engine would miss, pop, etc all the time, not just when hot. If you adjust the valves cold, try .016" intake, .018" exhaust. This is leu of setting valves hot, which is .013" and .015" respectively.

if its a burnt vavle how does one repair that? i know if its not adjusted right to readjust it, also what should these be timed at, could the timing have anything to do with it? thanks, chris

Chris, to fix a burnt valve you have to pull the head off the engine. Before you do that though, check your timing, your valve tappet clearance, and maybe check your compression when the engine is hot. These are all easy jobs, whereas pulling the head is much more time consuming. If you have a bad valve, you will probably see it as low compression compared to the other 3 cylinders. Might also want to check over your ignition, it might just be missing when it is hot due to point gap problem, dirty connections, etc. You should have a strong blue zappy spark, not a weak orange spark.
