My old TO-30 has the original 6 volt system and sometimes when I start her I feel like she barely has enough umpf to turn over.I'm debating over whether to purchase a 12 volt conversion at $150+
or upgrading to a 6 volt electronic ignition by
Petronix.Does anyone out there have any opinions or suggestions on which course is preferable?

I have a TO20 that I use daily and I replaced the 6 volt battery with a 8 volt and turned up the regulator a bit. Lights are nice and bright and it spins real good and fires right off. I purchased my 8 volt battery from battery warehouse for around $50 about two years ago and no problems so far. hope this helped you decide what to do!

I can appreciate your problem of slow spinning starts but I feel like the problem with my TO 35 is dirty connections and terrible condition of my entire wiring system. I will replace and clean what I can and try to keep my 6 volt system. That having been said, I have an old 48' Allis WD that I converted to 12 volt some years back. I just put the Petronix kit in her and I cannot beleive the difference it made. The tractor starts right up, she idles smoother than she ever has, and it has more power than I even thought possible. You simply take the old points and condenser out, use the same screws and holes to remount the plate for the Petronix kit, snap in the new accuator that fits over the shaft (it can only fit one way) and put your rotor button and cap back on. Remove the gound post (bolt) from the side of the distributor and run the two wires from the plate through this hole to the positive and negative posts on the coil. It is a no brainer, even for a milti-thumbed mechanic like me. Good luck.

My TO-30 was converted to a 12 V when I bought it so I don't have any experience with a 6 V TO-30. Having said that, I would think that your 6 volt system is plenty adequate to start yur tractor if you have a heavy cable from the starter switch to the starter and a similar heavy cable between the starter switch and the battery AND all the connections are clean and tight. You'll also need a fully charged battery so make sure that the charging system is working correctly. That will allow your starter to have maximum voltage and current during the starting sequence. Some time folks replace the starter system cables with those used to start cars with 12 volt sytems and these cables have reistance high enough to reduce the starting current. Make sure that you have clean and tight connections and heavy starter cables With regard to the electonic ignition, I have a 12 v Pertronix on my TO-30 and it, in combination with my rebuilt distributor, has resulted in quick starts and smoother idle. It has also eliminated fooling with points. (I might add mine is a working tractor on my ranch.) But I never had a cranking problem, which is your stated problem. I would fix that before I worried about electronic ignition. With regard to installing the electronic ignition, I found the instructions straight forward and there is good tech support from Pertronix via a toll free phone number.

I have seen several good reviews on the Pentronix units over on the N forum. The only bad comments I have seen is that the instructions can be tough to follow, or not totally make sense.... maybe that's just for those N guys though :)

Your good-ol 6V system should have plenty of kick to get your 30 started, even on a cold day. John's right, go thru all your connections, should be clean and shiny. If your battery is more than a few years old... probably time to be thinking about a new one. Make sure your charging system is working good first though. Weak charging system = Weak battery.

I ended-up running all new 12 guage wiring from coil to regulator to generator and adding a extra gound lead to the regulator. Also replced my rather thin, 12V style battery cables with thick-as-your-thumb cables to battery,starter, & ground. Helped my charging a good bit, and starts right-up every time.

Make sure ALL the connections are clean and tight on this system, you will be surprised at what a difference it can make. Run the ground lead direct to one of the starter fixing bolts.

I replaced my 6V system with a 12 volt alternator off this sight, and never looked back. The alternator is far superior to any generator.Switched the lights to 12 volt. I can see half the countryside now at night.The alternator works a treat !
