I have a TO-30 that was setting for 2-21/2yrs. I cleaned the tank and carb. Got it to start, BUT it will only idle and with the choke pulled out. Any attempt to give it more throttle it dies, release choke, it dies. I think its still in the carb. Good fire and starts on first turn of engine. Any ideas guys?
Thanks

When you get the carb back apart, pull the main jet, the one with a bunch of tiny holes scattered throughout. It takes a deep socket and I believe (but not sure) that it is a 3/8. Make sure all those holes are clear. Basically it runs on prime but not otherwise, and that often means that jet is clogged. It is also the one area, along with the float needle, that "varnished" gas seems to affect most in these carbs, and since it can be hard to remove unless you have a deep 3/8 sometimes people neglect it in a rebuild.

You might want to take the glass off the sediment bowl & then turn the gas on to see what kind of a flow that you"re getting...there is a screen above the sediment bowl, where it screws into the gas tank that might be plugged....happened to me. I had a real slow flow of gas and the carb wasn"t getting enough to run the engine continuously.

Thanks Tom,
I have good flow, bought new screen and gasket. Scraped out 1/4 varnish from bowl. Will soak carb. Hadn't done that yet. Cleaned orifices with tip cleaners.

When the engine runs only with the choke lever pulled out, and the ignition system is functioning properly, I always suspect an intake manifold/carburetor attach flange leak. This conditions allows air to bypass the carburetor and leans out the mixture. By all means do as George suggests and make sure that your ignition system is up to snuff. Then make sure that the intake manifold is crack free, on tight, and, since you removed the carb, that the gasket at the carburetor attach flange and the attach bolts are sealing properly. Also make sure that your power jet is screwed out about 1-1/4 turns from full in.

Ben, the carb rebuild kit is cheap, and most the time is in the soaking, not the re-assembly. Definitely worthwhile to rebuild the carb for a TO sitting that long.

I'd also recommend pulling a spark plug and checking your spark to make sure you have a good, blue, zappy, spark... not a weak orange spark. A weak ignition can also cause the problem you describe. A richer mixture fires more easily than a leaner mix when you have weak spark'ers, which is why the engine seems to run better with the choke pulled. If your spark isn't blue and snappy, clean your wire connections to the coil and distributor, check your points to make sure they are not corroded, and gap'em to .020". Just for the heck of it, make sure your plug wires are in the right order, 1-3-4-2, counterclockwise on the distributor. You can do all that while your carb is soaking in carb cleaner... right?

George

Sound to me like your concern is in the carb take it back off and buy rebuild kit would be good to have it soak in a cleaner over night any small engine repair shop will be glad to do it for you. then put back together and follow direction on setting the specs be carefull when you set the float its easy to get it out of specs
