I just had my starter rebuilt, bushings had gone bad. Replace the starter and started the tractor up several times. No problem, Then for no reason I heard a loud squeal. I removed the starter to find that the housing that goes up around the flywheel had broken. I went back and had the housing replaced. I install the starter and started several time then heard a loud squeal. Removed starter to find out that this one had busted as well. Is there something that I am missing when installing the starter. Is there something that I need to let my repair man know.

Tractor is a to-20 that has been converted to 12v but uses the 6v starter. Any Ideas . I have inspected my flywheel and its 100%

There is a return spring on the starter drive. Without(or if it breaks) this spring, the drive 'bangs" into rear of starter drive, and breaks housing. what you hear is starter pinion shaft, trying to keep alinement in rear of your starter housing (cone)after it breaks. I found out the hard way also,(I broke 2 back to back) Gregg/Ohio-- TO-35 Gas.

Steve

Broke 2 starter cones on my TO-30. Repaired the cone the first time and replaced it the 2nd time. Then I read where I should check the timing to make sure it was right on. Set timming by the book(I&T manual)and had no problem after that. Also shimmed starter out with shims made from a pop can. I had also switched to 12 volt.

NE is Nebraska so I assume you are a Husker fan on Sat.

Go Huskers!

Waiting for repair of starter should be done by Thur. The tractor could be out of time? Thanks
