I was out mowing, tractor was running fine, I stopped to gas up, after 5 minutes of mowing
the engine started to chug. I cleaned the carb,
flushed the fuel line, the gas cap is lose so there is good venting. I replaced the coil, replaced the wire from the coil to the dist positve lead. I have great spark. I replaced the thermostat and hoses. Engine starts and runs fine when cold, after it warms up it starts chuging and dies, it will start and die, start and die
and final will not start till it cools off.
Anyone have any ideas.

My first thoughts would be a coil.. I know you replaced it, but it wouldn't be the first time something new was bad.. Is there another vehicle you could cannibalize a coil from and test your '20 again?
Good Luck,
Chuck

You say "after it warms up". How long does it run from start up til it dies ????

Dennis, it will run about 5-10 minutes until
the temp get to 180 deg, which is where the
thermostat is opening, the old themrostat was stuck open. It never overheats.

Some possibilities: (not in order)

1)coil is breaking down under heat

2)condenser in distributor breaking down under heat (fix cheaper than #1)

3)fuel line too close to exhaust and is vaporizing gas(fix even cheaper than #2 - bend the line away from pipe)

4)????? cracked dist cap/rotor affected by heat ????

I suggest these assuming you've got a good gas flow (not vapor). When it stops and won't restart, crack open the fuel line at the carb and see if gas flows.

Next check to see if you've spark.

I'll bet you haven't got one or the other !!! Let us know what you find.

Dennis thanks for your input.

I have replaced the coil and condenser, I have
look at the fuel line routing, dist cap and rotor
look good, I have not checked the spark after it dies and i have not checked the gas flow. I will
keep you posted.

on my to 20 the fuel tank still had the original fuel shut off/valve/sediment bowl it was encrusted with sand in side the tank. new 20 valve cured it. sure better than buying a new 165.00 carb. but thats another story.duh. the old part birddog
