Well I got the starter rebuilt today and ready to bolt back on, but my question is; do I need to install a 12 volt coil, since the man at the starter shop said something should have already burned up, but starter would be ok if I did't grind it too long: The generrator shows output 14v, coil doesn't get too hot, and what about the voltage regulator. Or has this tractor possible been converted??? Thanks Gene in Louisiana.

Gene, I dont know whats been done before?? If you run 12 volts on a 6 volt coil though, it will run hot plus the points will burn up prematurely. If you use a 6 volt coil you need to add a series voltage dropping (12 to 6) Ballast Resistor ahead of the coil after the ignition switc OR ELSE a full 12 volt rated coil. The Voltage Regulator, of course, needs to be a 12 volt. Have you changed battery polarity from how she was original??? If so the Generator needs polarized, and the coil and ammeter leads need reversed.

Thanks for reply! I've been cranking it on 12v but disconnecting after cranking, will I hurt any thing by leaving the battery connected or is there a way to tell if the tractor has already been changed over to a 12v system??? Gene

If it were converted CORRECTLY ??? The coil would be a 12 volt or else there would have been that external ballast added..... ..The Voltage Regulator would have to be a 12 volt fer sure..... ... The Gen probably changed to a 12 volt although I have used 6 volt Gens to charge 12 volts simply by changing VR's only..... ....any light bulbs changed to 12 volts or they burn out..... .....

Look for coil labels and for any ballast resistoirs wired ahead of the coil????? ??

With things hooked up measure the voltage on the VR's BAT terminal???? and on the ARM (or GEN) terminal?????

IFFFFF F the coil gets so hot you can barely lay your hand on it, I suspect its still a 6 volt and theres NO ballast resistor.

Thanks John for all the info; I"ll do some looking and checking and get back to you: I"ve looked for the ballast resistor and didn"t find one,but I did check for the coil getting hot and it didn"t seem to be too hot,I checked after 15 or 20 mins of running; would that have been long enought? Thanks again, this form always helps greatly. Gene in Louisiana

Thas probably long enough. If you have an ohm meter you can tell if its a 6 or 12 volt coil. FIRST UNHOOK THE OTHER LEADS TO IT.

Measure the primary resistance between the lil + and - terminals. A 6 volt coil will be around 1.25 to 2 ohms or so while a 12 volt coil will be more like 2.5 to 3.25 or so.

Thanks John, I took the coil off today and tried to read some ##s but it has so much dirt & paint I could tell. Tomorrow I'll try the ohm test. If its a 6v what size resister will I need? Thanks again. Gene

Gene, Ideally the ballast should be near the same ohms as the coil, but they come in standard sizes of around 1.5 to 1.85 ohms but whatever you buy if near that will work. Rememebr they are high wattage power resistors around 30 watts or so, not Radio Shack 1 watt electronic use type resistors.

John I checked the coil ohms and it showed 1.8 so it is still a 6v coil and I will need to get a resistor and install ahead of the coil! Then will everything else be ok to stay like it is also regulator? Then I'm ready to go! Thanks for everyone help! Gene in louisiana.
