Afternoon Everyone
Got home last night from work and decided to try and boost the tractor from the famliy car. To my surprise she fired ( TEA-2085 ) right up. It was a releif to know it wasnt the starter I let her idle for a bit while I went inside to change my clothes. The bush-hog was already hooked up and reasy to go. So off I went, 1 1/2 hours later I was done. All the while I was working the tractor I noticed that the amp gauge want working. I shut her off, and tried to start her right up, there was nothing. I tried turning on the head lights to see if there was any juice ,, NOTHING. The battery was dead!!!!! !!!!! ! I have a couple of questions. 1st- Could my battery be shot and wont hold a charge ( Im thinking thats it ) 2nd. If the battery WAS shot would the amp gauge show any movment when the tractor was running? I have a fairly new battery at home that Im going to put in tonight and see if that works. 3rd, could my alternator be shot as well, If so how would I check this? The saga continues. Thanks in advance guys. Barry

That's one problem I managed to solve with the Fergie. Give it a fresh battery but leave the positive post loose. Whenever you shut the tractor off, lift off the cable. Re-attach to start and run. No more problems with starting.

Your charging system is probably good, if not, the tractor wouldn"t have run for an hour and a half on a battery that wouldn"t start the tractor.
It could be as simple as bad/loose/dirty terminal posts.

Barry, if you put a known good battery in and she does indeed draw charge, the old one was likely shot. See if it has electrolyte above all the plates and if no cells have a gray or mily look indicating maybe a bad cell??

A load test at a battery shop can see what shape the battery is in and yes, its possibe its bad and simply will not take a charge.

If you turn lights or ignition on when shes not running, if the ammeters good and wired correct, she ought to swing over in the - discharge direction, does yours??

If the charging systems working, even if the ammeter doesnt, the batterys voltage ought to rise from 12.6 setting to 13 and over at RPM if shes charging and/or the lights glow noticeably brighter from idle to wide open, does yours???

If it"s the battery, you may want to consider buying a used battery at Woodbecks"s in Stirling. They charge a flat $35, and guarantee them for life - if it quits, ever, take it back and take another one.

Some of my cars end up there, and some of my cars come from there! I"m Ernie Parsons, the MPP for Prince Edward - Hastings, and live just south of Stirling.
