My TO20 has had a spark plug fouling problem for a number of years. It has good compression, doesn"t burn a drop of oil, but runs too rich and fouls out the plugs and starts missing. It used to foul out the #1 plug until I put a new manifold on it. Now it fouls out the #4 plug. After changing the plug, it will run fine for about an hour. If I set the power needle lean enough to avoid fouling it stalls whenever the governor ups the throttle. New carb kit, all new ignition parts, experimented with various plug heat ranges. Nothing seems to solve the problem. Any ideas?

You say 'it runs too rich & fouls the plugs'.
Two thoughts - is it ok on main jet but too rich on pilot? That could account for fouling but still being too lean when throttle snaps open. Otherwise I'd check fuel level in carb.

I had a similar problem with my TEA 2085
It turned out that my spark plugs were the wrong reach (Too short) I put the right ones in and have not had a problem since
It may be worth checking

Yeppers, them deep reach plugs are down there in the combustion chamber where its hotter then the relatively cooler head/bock and stay hotter cuz its farther away from the heat sink (head/block). Provided, of course, theres no piston interference lol

I had a simular problem with my F40,drove me nuts. I finally had the carb rebuilt and took the air breather of and took it all apart and cleaned it. Problem solved. I took the screen out of the air cleaner. Its not easy getting it rolled up and back in. I used a spray paint can to roll it around it as tight as i could and then slid it down inside, worked like a charm. Good luck, hope you get it solved. Lester

Bob, Often times a hotter heat range plug ASSUMIMG YOU HAVE A GOOD HOT SPARK??? will help burn off potential fouling deposits but sounds like you tried that already. Are the plug wires in good shape and wire core NOT carbon core suppressor types??? Likewise for the cap n rotor being good??

If a good hot spark n good wires n a hotter plug dont help, and you cant lean her anymore, I guess you could upgrade to an electronic ignition with a high energy high voltage coil and run a wider plug gap !!!!! !

If the plugs have the regular flat washers an extra washer will make em run hotter, maybe try that??

Is the spark a nice visible blue and NOT a faint thin wimpy yellow??? If so, it could still be a weak spark problem from the coil or condensor etc.???

How ar out os you powerjet screw. It should not be out more than1-1/2 turns. If it is more than 1-1/2 turns, I suspect you have a leaky intake manifold. With the engine running, spray some WD 40 around the intake manifold to cylinder head junction and see if it gets sucked in. My WAG is that you'll find that you have a leaky manifold except around #4.

I had a similar problem, though my cause was obvious....it does burn oil.

I improved things by going to spark plugs that are one heat range hotter. Forgot the make now, but the standard number was 386 and I got 388s . This won't really solve your problem but it might make it last a bit longer.

It does sound like you are running too rich. Have you checked out the carb thoroughly?
