John-
I am usually a Ford 9N/2N/8N/NAA poster but have a mutual interest in Harry Ferguson also. I'm going to take a stab at this and the other question about rims. Rear rims were zinc plated. The center discs were painted grey just like the Ford N-Series tractors. They both used the same sources for most of their parts so it only stands to reason. Starters and generators would have been mounted and painted with the rest of the unit where radiators and seats( both semi-gloss black enamel ) would have been assembled down the line. HTH

I would have said no until the last week or so and after having long chats with Phil Fenner who regularly posts here and he tells me that the rear wheel rims were often silver and he says he has lots of photographs to prove it. I have no pictures in my collection like that, they are all Grey but knowing Phil now like I do, I have no reason to think that some were not silver I just haven't seen any though.

In all my research, I have not found any production starters that were black, but replacements, I am sure were black. There is evidence that the generators were sometimes black but most photographic evidence says gray. Regulators were black though. Iwould be interested in any references for black production starters. Always a gotcha out there I find.

I agree with you Phil, neither here in Coventry nor in Detroit have I seen any new tractors with black starters or generators, the whole tractor was grey, possibly with the exception of the rear wheels that you have found. If they were painted black they were replacements.
