Recently received a reprint of the Ferguson Dealer Shop manual from this site for the TO-30. In it are several references "See On-The-Farm Service Unit Manual" It seems to suggest there was a manual for day to day mantainance and minor or more routine repair.
Can any one shed any light on this? Is it available and where from? Being a novice at this I can use all the help I can get.

Pics of On-The -Farm Service Unit in reply to Bill - SC, 11-01-2005 09:45:07
These pictures were taken in Salem, Illinois in September of 2002 at a FENA gathering. I had never seen one of these units before, so I took front and rear shots.

Sorry about the file size - I didn"t want to shrink "em too much and lose detail.

Ya gotta like that!! Check out the tire guage and compression tester in the back of the case. Looks like a timing light in there too. Probably a dwell meter and a few other things. If they made that today it would be probably the size of a pack of cigarettes. The unit in the back must be a vaccuum pump for drawing down the air conditioner on the fergies!!! The one we had worked good ---- cold in the winter and hot in the summer!!

the way i understand it ,there was a unit called a Ferguson On The farm Service Unit which was portable and could be loaded by the dealer on a truck and taken to the farm to work on the Ferguson tractor in trouble,,one man could load it and it did all the tests one could imagine ,the manual you refer to here could have been used in conjunction with the unit to tell the farmer if he had some engine work in the near future, strange though i was thinking about asking John UK,if he was familiar with this tool and if they had it when he worked on Fergusons across the pond
John if you read this can you add anything,
Danny

I have a friend here in Ohio that has one of those units and has taken it to different shows that were feturing Ferguson. He also has one of the side mount Ferguson balers restored and mounted on a Ferguson HI 40 narrow front tractor plus a lot of other odd Ferguson implements

Hi Danny, It was something for the US only and it was sold direct to the the farmers I understand, we never had it over here. I do have pictures of it that someone posted a long time ago. It was something that would be useful to farmers miles from anywhere with no-one to ask and no Internet to use...John

Not to the farmers but to the dealer, the unit would have been priced in the same range as the tractor

I don't know about that Leroy, as I said I have never seen it, only the pictures, but the information that was given with the pictures led me to believe that it was sold to the customer too, I can understand the Dealers using it...JOHN

I have seen two of these units that were pretty well complete at the Ferguson Expos over the last few yrs. My ex-dealer/mechanic says they(dealer) used them to go to the farm and fix tractor problems to keep down time to a minmum. He mounted his to a pickup and it became a portable shop for small problems anyway. His was stolen and it was so expensive they did not replace it!!

Having seen those new pics I can well believe that it was expensive.

A few months ago one of these units was listed on ebay. It was a stand alone unit that could be used to test virtually every system on the tractor. If I remember correctly it went for a pretty penny on ebay.

I can believe that it would, it will be a very rare item now and I would have thought they would have been quite a rare item originally. We have something similar here with the complete kit of Ferguson tools used for repairing the tractor, they cost the earth to buy second-hand.

I believe there was a unit that Ferguson sold that was a combination volt meter and dwell/tach and I think an ammeter that was sold to allow the owner to do diagnostic checks on the ignition system, the charging system, etc. It might have had the a pressure gauge to check the hydraulics with also. I remember seeing someone having one for sale on ebay about a year ago. The believe the book is the instruction manual for that unit.

I have 4 different manuals for my TO-20 and still need to ask many questions. Massey Ferguson Shop manual Models TE-20 TO20 TO-30, operation and maintenance, Ferguson Tractor Model TO-20, Ferguson Dealer Shop Manual TE-20 TO-20 TO-30.. Parts Manual 120 Pages...I purchased them from this web site,, Ebay and other sites that happen to have them on sale, the most expensive was the Dealer Shop Manual, about 190 pages for 25Bucks, Good Luck....Albert

Hi Albert, The problem with all these manuals is that they assume you have some technical knowledge and that you will be able to follow it, but as we know lots of the guys on here only have the tractors as a hobby and are not into anything mechanical anyway. If you have little or no technical knowledge you can find it very hard using the manual as very often it will just leave you at some point without any actual details of what to do next all because they assume that this simple task you are doing is something you know about. They don't spell it out so that there can be no mistakes. The manuals can still be very useful though, just the pictures can help sometimes. That is why we are here to help you and why some of the answers are very long-winded, just so that there will be no confusion (we hope)...John
