I have been looking for an 8n to buy and have come across a to30 at a comparable price. the tractor is in good running condition. I have a good bit of experience with the old Fords and am fairly attached to them, I had no intention to buy anything other than an 8n but this Ferguson has live PTO! this is not an option I have with the 8n. Since I have no experience with the Ferguson I would be interested in hearing from those who have used both Fords and Fergies comparing performance, reliability, availability of parts etc. Any advice would be appreciated.

I grew up useing an 8N then I switched to a TO. 20 every thing was pretey siemulear the controls and such it had more power then the 8N and the front dident come off the ground as much mowen. I liked the 8N but it was easey to switch to the ferguson and it was just as reliable as the 8N and as easy to get parts for and repair I think you will find the switch natural there was a lot of ferguson in the old 8N.

I'm with Clarence on this one.. I own a TO30 and love it. However, it doesn't have a live PTO, as much as I wish it did.
See on the side of the engine what the number is.. It should start with the letter Z and get back to us.

The TO30 is by far a superior tractor. A much better engine with lots more horsepower and has overhead valves and wet sleeves. Are you sure it has a live PTO? You might have a TO35 Deluxe model which has a dual clutch and live PTO. What is the tractors serial number?

CLARENCE AND OTHERS, AFTER FURTHER REVEIW THE TRACTOR DOES NOT HAVE LIVE PTO. THE SELLER DID NOT UNDERSTAND WHAT LIVE PTO WAS AND WHEN I ASKED HIM TO SHOW ME HOW IT WORKED IT TURNED OUT TO BE THE SAME OLD STUFF. I DO BELIEVE IT WAS AN HONEST MISTAKE AND THOUGH THE LURE OF LIVE PTO IS WHAT BROUGHT ME TO LOOK AT THE TRACTOR I LIKED IT ENOUGH TO BUY IT ANYWAY (WITH SOME ENCOURAGEMENT FROM Y'ALL AND THE N-BOARD). SINCE I AM NEW TO THE FERGUSON, AND HAVE NOT GONE TO TOWN TO BUY ANY MANUALS YET, MAYBE Y'ALL CAN ANSWER SOME QUESTIONS. THE NUMBER THAT IS CAST ON THE LOWER LEFT OF THE MOTOR IS Z129A600 (THE LAST ZERO IS IFFY) WHAT WOULD THIS TELL YOU ABOUT MY TRACTOR? THE HOOD ON THE FERGIE LIFTS OPEN, THE 8N DOES NOT, DOES THIS RULE OUT A BRUSH GAURD ON THE FERGIES? IF NOT HOW DO THEY STAY OUT OF THE WAY, AND WHERE CAN I GET ONE? ALSO I NOTICE THE HYDRAULICS ALWAYS GO UP ON THIER OWN AND YOU HAVE TO CLAMP THEM DOWN WHERE YOU WANT THEM, ON THE N YOU HAD TO USE THE CLAMP TO HOLD THEM UP. IS THIS NORMAL ON A FERGIE? THE ONLY TROUBLE I SEE SO FAR IS OIL LEAKS OUT WHERE THE RIGHT STEERING ARM COMES OUT. IS THIS A POTENTIAL PROBLEM THAT NEEDS FIXING OR JUST ONE OF THOSE THINGS YOU OVERLOOK ON AN FORTY-SOMETHING YEAR OLD TRACTOR? NOW ITS TIME FOR A STUPID QUESTION I HAVE SEEN FERGUSONS PAINTED RED AND SEEN THEM PAINTED GREY WHICH IS THE ORIGINAL COLOR? MINE IS DARK GREY AND LOOKS SO GOOD THAT WAY I'M NOT CHANGING IT NO MATTER WHAT, BUT I AM CURIOUS IS THIS THE ORIGINAL COLOR? THE ONLY THING NEGATIVE I HAVE HEARD SAID OF THE FERGIES IS ONE GUY SAYS IF YOU RUN THEM TOO LONG THE GAS BOILS BECUASE THE TANK IS TO CLOSE TO THE MANIFOLD, HAVE ANY OF YOU FOUND THIS TO BE TRUE? WELL ENOUGH QUESTIONS FOR NOW I THINK I'LL GO ADMIRE IT FOR A WHILE. IT RUNS EXCELLANT AND STARTS EASIER THAN ANY 6 VOLT I'VE EVER SEEN. THANKS IN ADVANCE FOR ANY COMMENTS. VA

VA, Zane Sherman, (AKA The Ford Guru) used a TO20 for the mule for his Zane Thang. I don't have one myself yet, but from what I understand about it, it will be the best 80 bucks you can spend on your new toy. It should cure your lift problem, even though it's not the "correct" fix.
The other posts are right... Life as you know it has suddenly ended. It has just become immensely better. Welcome, my friend.

VA... me again...

I forgot to mention the front bumper. Ferguson sold a bumper that extended out a few inches more that a Ford bumper and had a big curve out with a curved notch in the top for the hood. The hood wouldn't open quite as far but plenty far enough. It was made out of 1/2x3" material. These bumpers today are scarce and very collectable. If you make one... Remember this... Its simple to make/build something diffcult (crude) but diffcult to make something simple (nice)....

Hi VA.... I could tell yu' allll is fom th south...

First... I want to tell you that you made a wise investment... Mr Ferguson isn't with us to make any more of those little grey "Dandies"....

Yes they were painted a dark grey that had a tinge of blue in it... and I love that color also....

The Z129 is the size of the engine. The 20's had a Z120 and the 35's had the Z134.

You have something minor wrong with your hydralic system to make it act like that... Most folks don't know this but the hydraulic pump is the same as the one in the 9N but there is a little difference in the control linkage on your 30. There is a very good vidio out on the repair of the hydraulic system. I can give you their address if you like.

There are good aftermarket parts available for them from several different venders and a few of the more important items are available from a MF dealer... but hang on to your hat....

I have put thousands of hours in on a little Fergie seat and have never had the gas boil....

I have six 8n's and I love them to pieces but they just aren't up to a little grey Fergie....

Sounds like you got a fine tractor. Sounds like you have a TO30. I have had a TO20 for a year or so now. I never heard such a thing about the gas boiling because the tank is too close to the manifold. I'll run my Ferguson all afternoon running a 5 foot brush hog and never had any trouble boiling gas. Sounds like a Ford - guy might be giving you some bad advise. I have the same trouble with the stearing box leaking. I'll have to fix that someday. I can't help with the hyraulics, Fred is probably right about adjusting the quadrant lever.
I used to drive a 8N when I was a kid. When I grew - up and went to by my own tractor, I found that the Ferguson tended to sell cheaper than N's at auctions. Now I have one, I see that it has some benifits over a N tractor. The Ford folks don't know what they are missing, pay more, get less. I love the way the hood opens - up so you can do whatever you want to the engine. Now I have a Zane Thang, I wouldn't let my Ferguson go if someone offered me two 8N's in trade.

Congratulations on your fine tractor purchase! You won't regret switching horses. Work the bugs out of it and enjoy. But be careful, you can catch a disease called the "Ferguson Bug" from it! It has a Continental Z129 (129 cubic inch) engine in it. Give us the serial number on the dash tag and we'll tell you the year of manufacture. Sounds like just an adjustment problem on the hydraulics. You probably ought to get the I&T shop manual for it,(FE-2) it'll tell you how to adjust the quadrant lever.If thats whats wrong with it. (Sounds like it is). Your color sounds right, all gray. The steering arms (I think) had leather seals in them like a Ford. 40/50 yrs old (go figure). Some take the oil plug out and drill and tap it with an 1/8" pipe tap and screw a zerk fitting in and use grease in the steering box. Sounds okay to me but may be a little stiff to steer in the wintertime. The brush guard problem isn't too bad. I got a standard 4" bumper and took 3/4" x 2" x 7" flatiron and moved it down about 5". This lets the hood clear it okay. Then if you need a guard on it, just use your mechanical abilities and make one that attaches to the bumper that hinges down too. What a lucky person you are. Hang on to it cause their getting rare. I wish I had a stable full of them. L8R----Fred
