Would anyone care to share any info on the Howard Reduction Gear? Came across a few photos of it but really could not get a detailed look at it or find a good write up about it.

This is a picture of the workings of a Howard. It was installed behind the trans. It was never intended to be used for high power/torque situations, only to slow the tractor down for things like rototilling.I think that it had a gear ratio of about 3.4 to one. A search on the web will no doubt give additional facts including this picture...

I have some pics if you want them but I have never seen a write up about the Howard Gearbox. The pics are showing the box in various stages of fitting and dismantling. I have a parts list for one too. Email me at:-

there's another Howard gearbox that goes on the pto shaft. Don't know much about it. Maybe it speeds up the pto shaft after the tractor is slowed down. I think it had a releasing clutch, so you could shut off the rotovator and still raise and lower the 3 point.

I think you maybe referring to the early Rotovator for the Ferguson, that had a little in-out gear arrangement that fitted on the pto shaft. It lifted the Rotovator using only one lower link arm and the "gearbox" was fastened around the PTO shaft on the four studs that hold the check chains. They were terrible to fit as the machine wasn't balanced and it was difficult to get it in the right position for it to slide on the PTO, once it was on it made a good job. The gear sliding arrangement did put the machine out of drive while you lifted it but that was all it did, this was part of the Rotovator, you still needed the reduction box in the tractor to slow it down. Do you think this is the one you mean?
