TEa20 questions from newbie in Oz

Dear All,

As before thanks for your replies to my (newbie) questions - they have helped me get and keep my old Fergie running well, despite my complete lack of skill or experience in mechanics (let alone tractors). Some follow-up questions:

1) I have a petrol leak around the cap thread, where the thread goes into the metal petrol tank (as opposed to between cap and thread itself). I have tried silicon (dissolved by petrol), 2 part epoxy (didn"t deal well enough and chipped off), some orange gasket seal gunk (which I thought would be oil and petrol resistant but wasn"t) and some 2-part solid stuff (that you mix and it looks like Blu-Tac then goes rock solid) which worked the best but it still leaks a bit. Any ideas on how I can seal it? I don"t know how to weld and don"t want to learn on a petrol tank (the thread and tank are different metals anyway which might be hard to weld).

2) Valve Seat Protection when using standard ULP (RON = 91 to 93) - I have read of people using 2-stroke oil to protect against VSR (Valve Seat Recession) does this work well? Or were they protecting against something other than VSR & I mis-understood? I am currently using a valvemaster additive (20ml per 20L) but it"s expensive.

3) The engine is really, really loud. I am sure it is "normal" but too loud for me. I have to wear ear muffs and my ears are ringing a bit even with them after an hour or 2 of tractor operation. Is there anything I can do to quieten the engine? Preferably cheap options? Perhaps a different and better 2H muffler to replace the one on Fergie already?

Thanks in advance!

Hi there... yes, soldering is good,,, either lead or tin (pewter) BUT !!! remember, such a large piece as a fuel tank needs a lot of heat, and that often means a torch, and you know how gas / petrol and open flames are... yes, you are right, you can get your hair done quite swiftly if you have bad luck. :-) just thought I should mention it since the other guys have forgotten how it is to get their hair done that swiftly. :-)

According to Graham Holland vertical exhaust tends to break the manifold more easily than the horizontal pipe and silencer / muffler. And, from what I hear the original type silencer / mufler are more silent than aftermarket ones.

Bill.

I would agree with Jim about soldering, we used to do it quite a lot and it works. No need to take any action with the VSR just run it on normal gas. When the tractors were being made there was no leaded fuel at that time in UK.
Regarding the noise problem, I would think that the muffler that is fitted now is not a genuine type I have never heard a noisy one that is fitted with a genuine muffler, you could as Jim suggests try an up-swept exhaust but it wont be as quiet as a down-swept type.

1. I think soldering would be the way to go for the gas cap - preferably not involving any flame...
2. From what I have read, you don't need to worry about using unleaded fuel. (Is this your concern?)In Canada here we have not had leaded fuel for around 25 years andd everything is fine.
3. One option might be to go for a vertical exhaust. Still loud, but gets the noise up above your head and it seems not quite so objectionable.
Jim
