While having some work done on my TO-35 I was thinking about rebuilding the hydraulic pump. this one has the older type pump. Do you have to reseat the control valves or other valves when you rebuild one? I have noticed some scratches or small gouges on the parts of the pistons that I can see. I have replaced the lift cylinder and piston, was just wondering how hard it was to rebuld the pump.

If it is the original type pump, the pistons very often have scratches on them as there were no piston rings on these until the later type so the pistons were "rubbing" on the side chambers, it was like this on the TE20 and TO20/30 but they got away with it possibly because they used a lower oil pressure. It isn't difficult to rebuild a pump and you can buy a complete kit that contains all the parts you would need from this site and various other places too. You don't re-seat the control valve, you replace it, as that was one of the places that this Pump leaked at and you change the side chambers complete with the valves as the side chambers and valves will be shot anyway. Make sure you get the kit with the Control valve and complete side chambers or you can buy a complete pump ready to go OR you can have your own reconditioned. When you do all this you need to up-rate the Pump to the next size pistons which is much better as it gives more oil flow and the pistons are fitted with piston rings to give better oil displacement and a longer life. Make sure you get a new safety valve too, although I would think it will be in the kit. While you are doing all this you may like to reset the control Linkage in the top cover while you have it off, if you need the info on how to do this email me and I will send it.

Thanks John, I was thinking about rebuilding it but wasn't sure about seating the valves. This is the old type pump, so I assume I will have to order whatever size pistons and control valves come in the kit.

Greg, The kit for the old pump has pistons that are 23.1mm - (29/32") dia and the kits now do have pistons with rings fitted which is a lot better, the valve chamber assy's have all the valves etc. fitted ready to go in the pump. Now it is possible to up-rate the pump if you think you need it, it will improve hydraulic flow for a loader or driving a motor, if it is just doing normal field work then you can go with the old pattern if you wish, but the difference in the price is nominal for the upgrade. I would also get the kit with the cam blocks in, as they are bound to have some wear on them now, and again the difference is nominal, about $30
1.you will need the kit for o/h of the pump this comes with all the "O" rings you need to change them ALL in the pump.
2.A control valve assy 189427M92
3.A Safety valve 183000M91(2500psi)
4.Gasket top cover to centre housing.181408M1
5. 2 gaskets for the round side covers.181217M1
6.Possibly a new "O" ring 195522M1 for the PTO brg.hsg. check it when you pull the PTO shaft out of the tractor. . If I can help further just email anytime..John

John, thanks for all of your advice. As soon as I get the tractor home I am going to have a go at the hydraulic pump.
