Hi there. The key has nothing to do with the start, you only turn the ignition on, like you do on a car. Then, to engage the starter, you press the clutch and push the gearlever to the right and then forward, where the "S" is on top of the gearbox. When the gearlever reach a certain position, the starter motor will engage and the engine will start. The lever you talk about under the seat on the left side, actually it is coming out of the left inspection cover on what is called the "center housing" is to engage the PTO shaft that comes out of the tail end of the tractor. On this shaft, inside the centerhousing the hydraulic pump is located, and when the PTO shaft is not rotating, the hydraulic pump is not rotating either, and you can not lift anything with the 3 point linkage. But you can lower an implement you have raised before. Once you engage the PTO shaft, you engage the pump too, and you can lift and lower the implement as much as you like. Now, to the transmission. On the lower end of the gear lever, it is supposed to be a cover of sheet metal to prevent water and dirt to enter around the gearlever ball and finaly enter the transmission too. Just above the lower edge of the cover there is a pin that goes throug the gearlever and housing around. If this ball is broken, like on my TED 20, the gear lever can be rotated, and it can be lifted up some, and enough to get out of the hole where it issupposed to be in. If this is the case, you can turn the gearlever around, and also it will not engage any of the gears. To remedy this, I will suggest that you loosen the 2 nuts which holds the plate that is located on top of the transmission where the gear lever goes through. When that is done, you can take the gear lever out, maybe you have to pull a bit, but it should come loose. Down there you will see and understand what is supposed to happen, and you will see where the little endball on the lowest part of the gearlever is supposed to go. Try this, and let us know what you find. Bill
