These shims were part number 2047 and fitted between the mounting face of the starter case and the clutch housing to locate the pinion in the correct position in relation to the starter ring on the flywheel. But in my manual it doesn't mention it for the Continental, only the Standard Motors engine, whether this is because it is a relatively new manual I am not sure. We have had this question before, a few times. It will be for the same reason though as we see the questions about the starter motor nose casing broken on the TE20 and this has been put down to all kinds of things from this shim to incorrect ignition timing to trying to start the engine before the starter motor has come to rest from the previous attempt. I think the only sure way to see what is happening when the starter is fitted is to have the engine out and see just where the pinion is in relation to the starter ring and then maybe shim accordingly. You have to make them now but you have a pattern from the mounting flange on the starter, still a pain to do though.

My manual doesn't call for any shim associated with the starter. What specific problem are you having
