My Dad just bought a TO-30 with the 12 volt conversion on it. What is happening to him is the points are burning out fast. He checked the resistor block and has 8 volts going out. Is this right? What else should we check? As always any help is appreciated.

No, the reistor output voltage should be 5-6 volts. Your reistsiatnce ned to be increased by about 50% or the coil needs to be replaced by a 12V unit. If you keep running that way, you'll burn out the coil beside the points. I found it easier to get a real 12V coil at NAPA for $14.95 (I think the NAPA part No IC-14-SB)then attempt to find the right resistor.

Farmer76..... ...Jerrys correct, for a 12-volt conversion, its so simple use a real 12-volt roundcan ignition coil with NO RESISTOR. NAPA IC-14-SB ($15USD, cheap) is a real 12-volt ignition coil that uses NO RESISTOR. Connect the coil (+) to battery (+) thru the ignition switch. Connect coil (-) to chassis ground (earth) thru distributor points. Because your 12-volt alternator is NEGATIVE GROUND and battery polarity must match alternator polarity. Points don't care, 6 or 12v, gap is still the same. Condenser don't care, 6 or 12v, still the same. (actually, condenser is usually good for 200v) Understand?..... ..respectfully, Dell, a 12-volt advocate for the right reasons

When I converted my TO30 to 12 volt I replaced the 6 volt coil with a 12 volt. Also put in an electronic ignition kit at that time.
