TED20 Governor Problem

I have got a TED 20 (Standard Motor Company engine)and i am having trouble with the governor. When i move the throttle lever slightly (In neutral) the tractor revs up like a car does instead of RPM being in proportion to throttle lever setting like more modern tractors seem to be. It then looses RPM as i drive away particularly in top gear (I struggle to take off in top gear (no load)without stalling). I have tried to reset the throttle/governor linkage according to the manual but it makes little difference. I have noticed the bump spring adjuster looks set a fair way out but it does seem to contact the spring as the manual says. What else could it be? do i need a new governor assembly?

Thanks for your help,
Barry

If the governor plate and weights are damaged usually the throttle shaft from the governor tends to stick or move very little. Are the instructions for setting the governor from the Factory Service manual or not, as some of the aftermarket ones do not give the correct info to set it. The only governor assy, that has ever been fitted to the Standard Engine is the type with the 4 flyweights we gave up using the ball type on the Continental engine. When you say the bumper adjuster is a long way out, it is normal to have a lot of threads showing, just be careful not to screw this in too far or you will break the bumper spring. I can send you the correct info for setting the governor if yours is not the factory manual, just in case.

If you are convinced the settings are ok then it will be the governor plate and weights that need changing. Just make sure that the governor spring is the correct one and not been substituted for an incorrect one, if the coils are open when there is no pull on the spring it has been overstretched and needs to be changed. The part number for the later spring fitted from 200,001 is M-F# 825-037M1 and will possibly be the only one you can get hold of now.

I have just checked the amount of movement available at the top of the governor shaft arm at the point where it is attached to the carburetter link rod, this gives a measurement of 16mm,(quite close to the fan belt) this was with the engine off and the entire linkage in place and seems to give full available movement to the carburettor. The bumper adjuster screw sticks out by 18mm from the timing case casting to the top of the screw head. Fortunately the governor spring doesn`t appear over stretched. Also I have been using a copy of an apparently genuine ferguson manual.
I will try to get a closer look at the governor arm in operation once i have got the battery recharged, if all else fails i will take the timing case cover off as i have got to repair the water pump seals anyway. Will the wear to the governor weights/plate be obvious?

Thank you for your help

What usually happens to the governor weight plate is that it throws a weight off, or maybe just one of the weights breaks away at one side only, when this happens it jams the governor and it can stick open or closed, so you wont have any problem seeing what it is. When you refit the timing cover make sure that you fit the oil throw washer on the crankshaft the correct way around. The movement you mention on the governor seems about correct. When it throws a weight from the governor it can often throw it through the timing cover wall. Check that the "mushroom" in the centre of the governor weight plate is not damaged in any way and before you refit it make sure that it slides easily in and out of the camshaft.

If you pull the front cover you will probably find that a couple of the governor counter weights are missing and are in the oil pan if it has not already been changed to the new style governor. It can be replaced with the ball type governor that was used on the TO-30.
