TE20 weak three point hitch?

Hello all,
I just bought a 1951 TE(A)20 with a rear plow. The 3 pt hitch is very slow to lift the plow, but it does lift it. I removed the plow and stood on the 3 pt hitch arms and it lifted me with the speed I expected to have with the plow attached (very fast). Just wondering, is my plow too heavy or do I have more serious hydrolic problems? How do I figure this out? Any help would be great. This is my first tractor and I love it! Thanks.

Mine is slow until it warms up. So, was it cold when you tried it?

Dennis, If the hydraulics are ok apart from being slow to lift when cold, can I suggest that you change the oil to Multi-grade 15W-30 as it will be thinner when cold and thicker when hot than the original GL1 oil specified.

Warm or cold, it"s slow. While the engine was running, I removed the pin holding the big spring under the seat, and lifted the spring slightly and the plow shot up like a rocket. Scared the crap out of me. There is, without a doubt, nothing wrong with my hydrolics. It"s as John (UK) suggested, there is too much end play in the Spring. There should be only .020 of an inch, or the spring should barely rotate, by hand, when the implement is up. So, I need to tighten the spring by turning the yoke. The problem is that the yoke is rusted to the shaft and won"t rotate. As per John (UK)"s recommendations, I tried penatrating oil and heat with a torch, but nothing worked. I"m going to need to remove the Hydrolic Lift Cover and go through the two round inspection holes on either side (the PTO lever and oil dip stick covers). Thanks to John (UK), I"ve got all the instructions on how to do this, the only thing I need now is some confidence! ;-) LOL Has, anyone performed this procedure before? Any tips? Thanks to all that have inputted.
Ivan

Just to update you all, here"s more.
This is what I"ve tried so far. I raised the plow to it"s highest position and turned the engine off. After 7 to 10 minutes it"s still up there. So, I gather there aren"t any leaks. When the plow is raised the spring behind the seat is very loose. It moves more than a 1/4 of an inch. As far as the weight of the plow, I"m not sure but I can"t imagine it being more than 800lbs. It"s a 6 position plow for grading the earth or plowing snow. Any other input would be appreciated. Transmission Oil level is at the full mark. Thanks,
Ivan

Your tractor should lift 800lbs at the end of the lower link arms, a plow even 3 furrow should present it with no problems. Does it hold up without dropping, if it drops it indicates a leak, if you turn the engine off or put the pump out of gear and from fully raised it takes 2 or three mins to drop it will just about pass ok. If it lifts ok and holds, check the big spring at the back of the seat, with the plow raised you should just be able to turn that spring, if it is a sloppy fit it will allow the control valve to move to far and cause the problem like you have. I can send you information on how and what to check if you email me at:-

just tell me again in your mail what the problem is and anything else you have tried. Don't try to adjust this spring unless you know what you are doing or you could break something.

Unless your plow weighs more than about seven hundred pounds, there should be no problem. Maybe oil pressure is low / leakage in cylinder ram etc.
