Ferguson plow moldboards

I"m new to plowing.

The moldboards on most of the Ferguson plows are split in to two pieces. The larger "blade" and a smaller leading edge or cutting piece on the bottom that is held on by 3 bolts.

Is it still possible to get replacements for these bottom cutting edges? Mine have a few broken points.

Also, how do you scour a rusted or painted plow blade? And, after scouring, what do you put on the blade to keep it that way.

I"ve seen many plows where the blades and coulters appear to be coated with some kind of black coating. Grease?

The black coating you refer to is probably a special plow paint preservative which comes off easily when first starting to plow in the spring. Most ag supply stores or tractor shops should have it. Less messy than grease.

You can click on email to give me the number off the back of an old share if you have it off or from the back of the moldboard which should be easy to read.

Hi Michael-
There is a very nice gentleman in Pennsylvania named Scott Sweigard, at Sweigard Bros. Tractor Sales who has a lot of NOS Ford and Ferguson plow parts for these old plows. Here's his number 717-896-3414. He should be able to fit you up with new parts.

As for the grease and rust, after a few passes they should clean up from use. The original A/O Manual suggests you remove all paint and grease from ground engaging parts before use otherwise it won't perform as well. But, like I said, I just run my plow for a few furrows and it cleans the moldboards up good. The trick is to apply the grease after use so they don't rust up quickly. HTH

The bottom piece is the share. To clean a rusted plow, rub it with a brick. To keep it from rusting again, coat it with old engine oil immediately before putting away.

You should be able to get the parts ok from what I have seen posted on here, there is one guy (I forget his name, apologies for that) who is clued up on this and no doubt he will see it and reply to you. Get the number off the back and post it on here so he can see it and he will know which one you need.
