You have to have the starter turn the engine over, fuel to the carburetor throat, and spark at the right time to ignite the mixture to get a start. Does the starter turn the engine over? If it does, check to make sure that you have a fat bluish spark. If you don't there is something wrong in the primary circuit of the ignition system( burned or loose points, points, broken wire between key switch and coil, bad key switch, worn distributor, bad coil, bad ground, etc). The secondary part of the system could have a problem too (water in the distributor cap, cracked distributor cap, etc) If you have a fat bluish spark and the engine turns over, are you sure that you have fuel to the carburetor? Open the plug at the bottom of the carb and with the fuel valve open, you should have a steady gush of fuel for a minimum of 30 seconds. If you don't have a steady gush of fuel, check the "secret filter" in the carb inlet elbow and the filter in the sediment bowl for clogging. If they aren't the problem than you may have a clog inthe fueltank part of the fuel valve. Without more info, I can't be of more help.
