I recently acquired a 1951 TO-20. I'm lost in figuring out what transmission is in it. The hydraulics for lift work fine. On the left under the driver's seat is another lever which I understand controls the PTO. Correct?

How do I know what kind of transmission is in this thing? Is it a Sherman and a Howard? What does "live PTO vs not live PTO" mean?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The Sherman and Howard transmissions were auxulliary transmissions that were "add on's". They had an addition lever or cable depending on the brand that allowed overdrive or underdrive or both depending on the model. The basic transmission is a 4 spd with and S position that is for the starter switch. It's a safety device to allow you to start the tractor and assure that it isn't in gear.
Yes the lever on the left side of the transmission housing engages and disengages the pto AND the hydraulic pump. A live pto has a dual clutch, When you push down half way, you disengage the drive to the wheels but the PTO and pump still turn. When you depress the clutch down completely, you disengage the pump and pto.
The TO-20 does not have live hydraulics. When you step on the clutch you disengage the drive, the hydraulics and the pto from the engine.

A word of advice. Get yourself a Factory Shop Manual, and operators manual and, if you want to work on your tractor, a parts manual. The Factory shop Manual has systems descriptions that tell you how the tractor works that are invaluable. Welcome to the world of antique treactors.
