Dismantled my head this weekend to find:

1. inlet valve head diameters were all 1.25" ; manual calls for 1.10".

2. exhaust valve springs were all 1.48", free length; manual calls for 1.787"

Is the manual in error (I doubt it) or did somebody make a big mistake here? I notice that the specs for the diesel engine call for 1.25" inlet valve heads.

Thanks

Just a thought - for the oversize valves to fit someone must have cut the seats back. You"ll either have to continue with 1.25 valves or get valve seat inserts fitted to reclaim the metal.

Thankyou, John. I was also curious why the exhaust and inlet spring retainers are different. The inlet is one piece, while the exhaust is two piece, with a kind of spring circlip holding them together. The exhaust retainer in therefore 'taller' than the inlet, which, if all the springs are the same length, will offer a greater 'preload' to the exhaust valve. Is this the case?

I can't find any reference to this at all. The only difference that is possible according to the parts list is that some engines did have Rotating Exhaust valves, this involved different valves fitted with a cap on top and a different valve guide, but nothing like you say. Would it be possible to take a picture of it if you have a digital camera and send it to me at:-

if I see it I may be able to match it up, I even checked the later 87mm engines but they are the same....John

The 1.25" valves were fitted to the Mk1 TED engine and also the 20c TEF engine. Whoever did this may have got the valves from a Triumph TR sports car dealer as the engines are similar and at one time a lot of engine parts were sourced from these dealers as there were few parts to be had from the normal dealers, however all that has now changed. The Inlet valves you need are 825388M1 (MF) or S61902 (Sparex)...Valve Springs are 825186M1 (MF) or S61906 (Sparex)
The manual is correct with the size of the Diesel engine (20c type) inlet valves at 1.25"
Sparex parts should be available from your local tractor dealer to order.
