Transmission worked fine until changed fluid. Now sometimes if left in neutral it wants to grind when going from neutral into gear.It will change into any gear once it is in gear perfectly long as it is not left in neutral too long. I start it in gear any it will shift fine, if I put it in neutral while running get off to move something it don't go back in gear. I shut down and restart. Some times it works fine for a hour then it want. Have tried many types of fuild and the thicker the better it changes. Thanks for any suggestions and help!

Now I have found out if I hold the clutch in long enough for the PTO to stop Turning it does not grind at all I just have to take my time. The gear oil in the trans/gear box is a 85w 140 from NAPA. Will it cause damage for me to keep running if I slow it down to keep it from grinding. Just bought a new lot and box blading it 5-6 hours a day. Plan to restore this coming up winter don't want to cause damage. Thanks

It is far too heavy and it will also be the wrong specification I would suspect. Don't forget that the primary use of this oil is to operate the hydraulic system and hydraulics do not like thick oil. you should change the oil ASAP in that oil will be additives that will cause a "corrosion" effect on the yellow metals used in the Pump the differential and the gearbox. If you have only just changed it you should have no problems with that but if you leave it in there it could cause you problems.

You can also use 15W-30 Multi-grade oil in the transmission and hydraulics. You don"t say if you have a live-drive clutch in your tractor or a single clutch. The Dual clutch is very particular about its settings and if they are wrong you don"t get enough movement in the clutch to operate the two clutches, so they don"t separate properly and this causes drag on the plate which turns the gearbox over, this causes the grinding noise when you try to engage gear. Check that there is free play in the pedal of 3/8" measured under the footrest to the top of the clutch pedal arm. It should be 3/4" on the single clutch model. If everything is set correctly and it still gives trouble it will mean taking the engine out to repair and reset the clutch.

Most likely clutch out of adjustment or oil on driven plate.

I am gussing that the transmission is coasting after you step on the clutch. That is fairly normal to some degree. The oil that you should have in the transmission is 90w GL1. It is fairly thick compared to hydraulic oil. Try the 90w oil first and if the problem persists to the point of grinding more than momentarily when you shift in to gear you may need to readjust the clutch. It may be dragging slightly and keeping the gears turning when in neutral.
