Hi All,

I have a to-20 that I play around with. It has an exhaust manifold that is cracked. The other evening I was driving it when it was getting dark when I noticed sparks coming out of one of the cracks in the manifold. What could be causing this? Is this bad? Is it normal and the muffler just normally acts as a spark arrestor? Thanks.

It is a you thought lumps of hot carbon, it can be dangerous though if you are working with dry material or if you have a small fuel leak, it could cause a fire. Really the manifold needs changing just for your safety. You only see things like this when it is going dark but it is happening during the day too so you can understand how fires can start up for no apparent reason.

Likely normal, and I suspect the sparks you see are occasional bits of glowing carbon chunks that have been dislodged and blown out the exhaust. Every now and then after dark I see a spark or two come out the muffler on my old B, exppecially if it's in a hard pull.

Thanks guys for the responses! I thought it might be normal since she has been running great, but I wanted to check here with the experts. You guys are great.

Oh yeah, I plan on changing the manifold, and in fact have one sitting in my basement, but I have been holding off as I want to try and restore the old fergie.
