I believe my tire dealer uses a methanol mixture.

Besides the other suggestions, there is a product called"Rim Gaurd" that is made specifically for this purpose.

Windshield washer fluid is probably the cheapest (alcohol based), RV antifreeze (the pink stuff about 30% propylene glycol) will work and safe for animals, regular antifreeze (ethylene glycol water mix) will work but is toxic to animals. Just don't dilute the washer fluid or RV antifreeze any more than it already is. They are mixed for "burst" protection to 50F below 0 (meaning that they will still freeze into a slush, but not expand and break anything). If you don't like the slush idea and want a little better protection with the safe stuff, you can mix your own propylene glycol (sold as Sierra brand at various hardware stores and NAPA) with water. I have heard that windshield washer fluid works well. Never tried it, maybe some one on the forum has.
