Before you fit the starter back on the tractor try to find why it was broken in the first place. Check if you have end float in the crankshaft which will allow the flywheel to strike the nose if the starter isn't adjusted correctly or if the end float is too great. End float is caused by worn shims and thrust plates on the front main bearing

Well we used to have the engine out when we tested them so it was easy then....but maybe you could remove the bottom plate behind the engine on the front of the clutch housing and you can get to the flywheel there. You now need to be able to move the crankshaft forwards and back just to see how much movement there is. Really the engine should come out to do it as you can then measure it properly, but you may be able to do it through the bottom panel but I have never needed to do it that way. I have a diagram that shows you how to set the starter up to the flywheel as there is very little room for error, but again to do it properly you need the engine to come out. The starter offerd at Tractor Parts Inc for $103 Isn't mispriced. I just bought one, what a deal!It works great. It fits just like the original.
