Just readjusted the tappets on my TO35. Ruined the valve cover gasket. Permatex claims their silicone RTV High Temp can be used to make valve cover gaskets. What do you all think?

Remember, too, to get RTV designed for oil-resistance. I believe the Permatex Ultra Blue is what I've been using for this, and it says right on the package that it has outstanding oil-resistance and can be used for valve-covers, etc. I have used it on pans, valve covers, externally-mounted oil pumps, etc. and haven't had any trouble. Just don't use too much and make sure your surfaces are all very clean. I normally brush the surfaces with a brass wire-brush on a grinder, then clean with a solvent that doesn't leave a film (like brake cleaner).

Good luck!

I had a 1978 Ford van about ten years ago with a 351 engine with lot of miles on it and when changing sparkplugs I always marveled that there was not one hint of a valve cover oil leak on either side. At some point I removed the valve covers and found out that there wasn't a gasket under there, but only a sealer, so I would say that it would work.

I used the blue stuff on both covers on a Chevy 2.8 liter. It was the only thing that would stop the leaking oil.

Does anyone beside me think that the quality of rubberized gasket material isn't nearly as good as it used to be anyway. Especially the cork variety.

That stuff works O-K for small gaskets....but it's very hard to make a big gasket like that, that will seal well. I'd just get a new gasket...they're cheap enough. If the cork gasket gives ya any trouble, glue it with some weatherstrip adhesive (That yellow snotty looking stiff that comes in a squeeze tube)- works every time.

If the manuafacturer says you can than you can. I've never done it but I know people who have used in on their cars and were happy. It's probably better than cork anyway.
