TO30 PTO problem

I have a TO30 with a bush hog attached. I have a problem with the PTO "jumping" out of gear.
When I engage the PTO I can feel the gears engage when I move the lever all the way back to the stop position, but when I let the clutch out and the tractor starts moving and the cutter turning, the lever moves forward and disengages.
The parts manual shows a detent near the shifter shaft is this my problem or something else?
For now I have the lever fastened back with wire and the unit seems to work fine, but I don't like this kind of repair. The PTO shaft seems to have excessive end play, about half an inch, is this the cause or do I have another problem as well?
Any help or advice will be much appreciated.
Sorry to be so long winded, but wanted to provide as much info as possible.

Unless you give all the details its impossible to get right answer so it is ok to be long winded....lol no-one more long-winded than me giving answers, you have to try to be sure that it is understood. The shaft having the end play will have something to do with it I am sure, it sounds like a circlip has popped out of its groove and is not holding its position anymore. If it is the detent that is causing the problem you should be able to feel it on the lever as very little loading and doesn't feel a solid "click" anymore as it drops in place. Really it does need sorting out soon as it wont do the dog clutch any good if it is popping out like that it will wear the teeth. Just take the PTO shaft out of the tractor and fix it.

John, Thankyou for your reply. I'll get the shaft out next week and see what I have. Regards.
