I just drained and refilled my 1955 TO35 tranny and hydraulics. I used NAPA 90w GL1. I drained it for about 36 hours then refilled it. It has taken over 32 US quarts to get the oil to show on the stick. It shows at the low mark right now. The book says it should hold 32 quarts. Do I put more in or assume the stick is incorrect? I know from experience on a TO20 that too much oil will run out the ends of the axles and goof up the brake shoes. There is about 7 1/2 inches of oil in the chamber. I've run the tractor for an hour or so but still get the same level.

It takes 32 quarts as it says, no more, no less. When we used to do them and had to refill with oil like you, we used to fill with the correct amount of oil as stated and leave it as that was correct and it does take some time to level out but the quantity is correct. The oil on brakes isn't such a big problem on the 35 as the 20 as they have better sealing on the axle shafts. If the level is correct, to check, it will just run out of the bottom setscrew that holds the round side covers on if you remove one. It may be that it is not the correct dipstick, we have had that before.

Hi John,
Thanks for responding. I have put in all but about a gallon of the second pail of oil. The stick now registers on the middle mark between the low and full marks. The stick certainly looks authentic but it may be the wrong one. The other thing I noticed when examining the pails of oil was that they were rated as 35 lbs. rather than 5 gallons as I assumed. The pails sure looked the same size as other plastic 5 gal. pails. I will check by looking at the bottom bolt hole of the side plates.

Another curious thing I noticed was the lift action seemed jerky instead of smooth as it was with the old oil. When it warms up it seems better.

Yes make sure just what the grade of oil is and the amount, I wish they would mark these pails all the same and then there is no confusion. Usually when you get a jerking action of the hydraulics it means that the Pump is not running on all four cylinders, it is possible that it has sucked something up that has been disturbed when you have changed the oil and it is holding a valve open in the side chamber, consequently it it is not working on that cylinder. Use the hydraulics as much as you can and it may just clear it, if it doesn't then the Pump will need to come out, but tell us what happens first before you consider doing that. Just check the oil level through the setscrew hole as that cant be wrong. To prevent the Pump sucking up anything out of the bottom is difficult as there is no filter, the only way to try and overcome it is to change the oil every 12 months as it does deteriorate even with standing and draining it while it is hot as possible will wash all the crud out that may have got in there, make sure that the Rubber boots on the gear levers are good, replace if necessary, its cheaper to do that than have to mess around with the Pump.Another place that crud can get in is behind the top link connection, there is a large rubber boot in there and they perish after a while, changing that will help too.

Thanks John. I'll give those things a try. I came down with a miserable sore throat and am confined to the house. I hope tomorrow to be out again.
