Pulled the Pto Shaft today - No problem - shaft apparently not twisted or muchroomed thank goodness. As you pointed out circlip in front of bearing completely gone. Found the dust in bottom of diff housing, got that flushed out. Since the ring was gone, shaft moved forward and ORC badly wore back of support housing to the point that the back of the seal is also worn, bearing seems smooth. One good point. ORC kept shaft from moving farther in.
Question, should I consider changing to a 1-3/8 ended shaft since housing, seal and clip need replacing?
Has any one on the formum done this? I have found a couple of sources, but a little concerned about quality since so much comes from the far east. John can you comment on sparex quality or do they source out of the far east also?
I bought tractor last September, this first experience working on it. Thanks again John for your help. Any other advice will be welcome.
Regards.

Hello all. I am new to site, having purchased a TO30
in fair condition , I was using a brush hog and ran over a rubber tire in the feild, shortly after It started having problems engaging the pto, then the shifter shaft pretty much frooze in place.
reading the other post about pto lead me to split the tractor and look the shaft does not look bent or twisted but will only move about 1/2 inch when I try to remove it, the shifter now moves back and forth the coupling gears look ok, I guess what I am asking is should I cut the shaft to remove it or look for something else, you know money grows on trees here, haha any help will be greatly appreciated
Brad

It would make sense in some ways to change to 1-3/8" shaft but you also have to consider what machinery you have to alter to use this size of PTO. It may be that you only have the one item but you will need to change the ORC to fit the new shaft. You need to see what machines you need to change and how much it will cost to do them all. It could be worthwhile if you have other later tractors that could use these machines too. The Sparex PTO conversion has been around for a very long time and I have never heard anyone gripe about the quality. As far as I know most of Sparex parts are made by themselves here in UK, at least that is what they advertise. Really I wouldn't be too worried about quality problems on this PTO shaft as there doesn't appear to be any and there are a lot of tractors fitted with them now. Only you can decide whether it will be worthwhile for you due to the cost that maybe involved it would be nice to have the larger PTO but not at ANY price. The Sparex part number is S0280. You will also need the cover for it for safety's sake S60456 and a gasket S61322. Order from your local tractor dealer.

Bill,
It was my good fortune to have a 1 3/8 PTO shaft installed on my TO20 already when I bought it. I run a B. Hog, post hole digger, & finish mower, and have run and sold a few other PTO items. I can tell you the 1 3/8 PTO is GREAT! It is quite liberating to know I can just hook-up any PTO implement I might run into at auction.
Can't speak for the quality of the stuff sold nowdays.
I see the conversion kit is running $105 on this site. Don't know the cost for the repair parts you need. If it approaches $100, it's probably worth the upgrade to 1 3/8". You will still need an ORC for bush hogging if you switch to 1 3/8 inch PTO.

George
