Did the Ferguson come with a thermostat? There wasn't one when I bought it and I've run it for three years without one. I have had to add water/coolant every year but I don't know if the thermostat has anything to do with it.

if you buy a thermostat from central tractor DONT buy the one listed for the ferguson. you need to get one for an 8n. the thermostat goes in the upper radiator hose and the one central tractor sell for the fergies is wrong. i used the one for the 8n in my to-20 and it works fine

Hi Phil

The thermostat contributes to a faster engine warmup and keep the engine at its normal
operating temperature especially in cold climate.

If no thermostat the engine will run under the normal operating temperature will consume more
gas will cause more air pollution will produce
exhaust smell (not completely burned gas)
and if running in cold and high power demand you risk valve dammage.

If you want pleasant and longer operation you should put a good new thermostat verify
if the radiator cap is good (pressure releif)
you can bring it at your favorite car repair shop
they should have a rad-cap tester.

For cooland add.. it is possible that your
radiator cap is not tight and the coolant flow is greater to the top of radiator if no thermostat is present.

Hope it will mhelp

A little more...

When you fill the radiator and engine is cold
and run engine to its normal temperature
the coolant will expand, the radiator cap releif valve will open and the surplus of coolant will
be evacuated by the overflow tube.

So when the engine will be cold again the coolant will be less in volume and it will be 1 to 2 inch
under the filling point and it will stay
there for long time (year(s) if all is normal. In more recent vehicles there is a recuperation recipient and the surplus of cooland is sent to the recipent when hot and sucked back to radiator when cold.

Conclusion: we should not expect that the coolant
level will be always flush to the filling point
when engine is cold.

The coolant/anti-freese contains anti-rust
compounds and should be replaced every 2 years
especially if reactor is rarely used. It will prevent radiator clogging and unwanted rust
and contamination deposits in engine.

Happy red riding tractoring

My F40 has a thermostat and the OP manual states:
An inoperative thermostat, or one removed from the
system will cause improper warm-up and operating
temperatures, resulting in excessive condensation
and crankcase dilution. I just installed a new one
since my old one did not operate properly. Hope this helps.

The TVO Ferguson would I suggest require a thermostat to get engine hot enough to switch from petrol to TVO. As for the diesel Fergie I have 2 and both have thermostats.

Thank you gentlemen. Resolved - to install a thermostat and check the radiator cap.
