Control box on a FE35 Voltages

I have a FE35 with a Standard Motor Company Diesel engine. The control box is a Lucas RB108 (not the one in my manual). I have done the test that the manual suggests ie. start the tractor, take on of the leads off the battery and measure the voltages increasing the throttle as you go.

I watched as the voltage went in excess of 20 volts and then dropped to a constant 19.5 volts when the control box kicked in.

My question is, isn't 19.5 volts a little high to charge a 12v battery? I would be expecting to see 13.8 or there abouts on my car. I know that car batteries are different from tractor batteries but that is a big difference.

Is my control box due for replacement? (I guess that it is over 40 years old!)

Hi Jon.

The voltage should be around 14 volts. If you live in a mild climate it's ok with 13,8V, in cold climate it should be around 14,2V.
20 volts is way to high. It will kill your battery .

Thanks Gubra, forgot to mention that I am in Australia, we do have a mild climate.

Does anyone want to comment on the Lucas RB108? Have I got the wrong box? Should I just ask my tractor spare parts man for a replacement box?
