Got a "50 TO-20. Have not started it yet, been tooo busy trying to get the 9N running and out of the way so the TO-20 is tarped in the yard and waiting for me.
On the TO-20 it has a Hup Hi/Lo and a Howard.
With the 5 speed trans, how many forward gears do I have? 15 or 30? Would that then give me 3 or 6 in reverse? and the top speed of the 5 Speed trans in overdrive would be how much? Any and all information is appreciated!
Have a good one!
Bruce

Thank you for the information! It will also make it easier to find the correct gear to pull start this tractor this weekend after draining the crankcase full of gas. Looks like the previous owner forgot to close the valve as well as chewed up the ring gear. Have a good one!

The above chart will give your approximate speeds with the Howard in the "high" range. In the low range, it would be proportionately less, but I am still looking for that information... incidently John Smith (Ford 8n) has a site that talks about these transmissions... See below... click on "Sherman transmissions".. Hupp and Howard are down the page.... Jim

Found a post on the Ford N board that says that the Howard reduction was 2.75 to 1... If you take the speeds in the picture post and divide them by 2.75, you should have the speeds for the Howard low range.... Keep in mind that the Hupp also changes the PTO speed... The Howard is after the transmission and does not affect PTO... Jim

I don't know about the auxilliary transmissions, but the TO-20 is not a 5 speed. It's a 4 speed and you are probably confusing the "S" (for Start) with the number 5. You see it has a provision for starting that precludes starting in gear. The fomula for determining the speed ratios is: Transmission speeds X ranges for Hupp X ranges for Howard. Since the TO-20 has 4 fwd speeds, and IF the Hupp has 3 ranges, and IF the Howard has 2 ranges then 4 x 3 x 2= 24 speeds. Since the TO-20 has 1 reverse speed, you'd have 6 reverse speeds given the same assumptions.
