TEA20 Block

Just noticed last night that the block on my TEA20 is toast. Big crack running 3/4's the length of the block, about 4 inches down from the top of the block. Been welded before in its lifetime, but crack is still showing through and is seeping slightly.

At this point, I don't know if it can be fixed or not. I'll talk to a few guys that can weld cast and see what they think. If not, well, I'll be looking for a block. Now, here's my question: Would a Continental (i.e. out of a TE20 or TO series) bolt right in, or would I have to make modifications? If I can't find a block for the Standard motor, I have no problems dropping a Continental in, if they would fit. A Continental might be easier to find out here in Alberta.

Thanks.

Lyndon

You could fit a Continental if needed, you would need a different thermostat housing, carb and manifold are different, fuel pipe from tank to carb. If it is 6volt the starter will be ok but if it is a 12volt the starter will need changing as the 12v drives from the opposite side of the Flywheel. The fan cowling may possibly be wrong too, the water pump could be in a different position. That's all I can think of off-hand.

It's a 12 volt, I believe. Swapping to a different model of engine would be a last resort. I have a Ford V-4 laying around, but the work to mate it to the bellhousing would be pretty major. It's good to know that I have an option in the Continentals, if need be.

Thanks for the info, John.

I bought a TEA20 with a Continental installed. I took it apart to see what had been done. They kept the TEA flywheel and the Lucas starter. This required some machining and redrilling to fit the Continental crankshaft. (It was about to come loose!) There may have been something done to the pilot bearing. It seemed like the bellhousing bolts lined up okay. They also kept the Lucas distributer, for whatever reason. Also, the TEA20 engine is longer than the Continental, so you need spacers where the front axle support fits the front of the block. From what I could see, they had no problem with radiator and shroud or with the gas tank.
I'm in the process of putting a later model diesel engine into mine. E-mail me for information.

The starters on the Continental and the Standard 6v are the same, flywheels are not but pilot bearing is same.Lucas distributor is fitted to the TE20 with Continental so that is ok. The bell housings are the same for both engines. Gas tanks are same. They did use spacers and some tie rods between the front axle carrier and the bell housing when they fitted this engine. If the TEA was the 80mm one it should fit the same fan cowling but if it was the later one with the squish tube in the head it wont as the water pump is in a different position.

By the way, it's an 85 mm engine, if it makes a difference.

I have a Z120 block off a TO-20 if you want... I got the tractor for parts (mostly the crankshaft). What part of Alberta are you at? I grew up in Wainwright and worked on farms in Grassy Lake & Rosemary alot. My family still travels up there quite a bit and could possibly deliver... Let me know if you're interested. I can send pics or whatever.

Hi Mike,

I'm a little north-west of Edmonton, near Barrhead.

I'll keep your offer in mind. I'll find out if my block is salvagable, or if there is something nearby. Dropping another make of engine will be a last resort. I'll try to keep in touch with you over the next couple of months, as I find out more.

About the block; are there any cracks between the cylinders, or any where else? Also, are there any other parts on it, or is it a bare block?

By the way, where are you living now?

Again, thanks for the offer.

Lyndon

Neighbor had same problem. After welding still leaked. We removed everything from that side of the block and did serious gringing and high speed wire brush to get to bare metal. Applied about 1/8 inch of JBWELD over entire length of crack. Has not leaked a drop in 3 years.
