Hi All, I have spent a long time reading this site thinking how nice it would be to restore a fergi. Finally I decided to get my own. Found a tef20 (approx 1950) and now I need to pick your brains!!! What is my next course of action? Starts by a jump start. (It has no ignition. key, battery)It smoked a lot and the guy gave me a "spare" engine which is free to turn. pto, transmission etc work fine. Do I tackle the engine first or the brakes or something else. Is there a "most important list"?? Any help would be great. I will post some photos (if someone tells me how!!!) Thanks Arderra.

Hi Guys, Tanx for the quick reply.
When I looked at the tractor, we got it started by pushing it down a hill (thats where we found out that the brakes need work!!!) Smoke: John asked where the smoke came form? answer = everywhere!. The exhaust is like a sieve!! From memory it was grey / white. We had to air lock the engine to stop it (no ignition switch )but I have a second engine which might be better(?). I knew the first engine was weak thats why I got the second thrown into the deal. The tractor is in Ireland.

Any info would be great. All this is new to me so any information would be gratefully appreciated. Thanks

To stop the engine you should pull the STOP control on the left side just below the dash panel, it looks like a choke control on a carb engine.Smoke grey/white and I suppose it was smelling badly of diesel, Just run the engine and see if it settles down the valves may not be seating quite properly but running it should cure that. To start that engine there is a excess fuel button on the front face of the Injection Pump, press it in with the STOP control also in. There is also a decompressor lever under the right side of the dash, press it down if the battery is low, there are two positions, press it to the first one and it will fire on one cylinder then bring the lever up again and it will run on all four. When the engine is hot it should start without any excess fuel button only use that when cold and the decompressor only when the engine will only turn over slowly. You need to change the silencer though so you can at least see what you are doing. To bleed that fuel system now you are going to have to fill up the main tank right to the top and then it will fill the small auxiliary tank at the back of the dash panel on the left side, remove the bleed pipe from this and allow the fuel to spill out of it, then replace the bleed pipe and do the filters, some have a fuel lift pump on them the early ones don"t but you bleed them differently. If you tell which one you have I will be able to tell you how to bleed it.

John as always has great advice. I would only say that if you have it running and maybe using it at all, I would tackle the brakes first. It"s always essential to be able to stop, if indeed you have it going....!

Well it won't be a 1950 model, the first one was built in 1951 serial number 200,001. You don't say where it smokes, if it is the exhaust and it is black smoke you may be able to clean that up with having the injectors serviced, if it is blue smoke it more like it is burning oil, if it is grey or white it sounds more like the valves need regrinding. Get the engine running and see what is smoking, this engine also "breathes" when the engine is worn from the sump breather next to the oil filler but it could also do this due to the vacuum pipe from the valve cover being blocked and the fumes are not being extracted from the sump as they should be. The TEF was never sold in the USA or Canada, there are odd examples over there, most went to Scandinavia, Europe,Australia. If you want more information, email me at:-

I have a lot of pre-written information for this tractor and I can write some up for you if it is something I don't already have.....John
