what is the difference between cat I, II, and III 3- point hitches??? I was told today that II was standard on 30-50hp tractors, but that doesn't sound right to me.

Just to draw your attention to the fact that the Cat1 or any category of linkage is due to a patent of design by Harry Ferguson It wasn't intended to be a standard at the time but it was so well liked that it was adopted, along with the PTO position and size, although that was later changed as more power was required. Every tractor produced now uses these standards originally by Harry Ferguson. He is responsible for a lot of what we now take for granted on the hydraulics and 3 point linkage.

CAT 1 is standard up to ~45 HP, then CAT 2 from there up to ~90HP, then CAT 3 above that.
There is a CAT 0 also, that is for baby tractors, like some larger garden tractors.

The main difference is the diameter of the connection pins for the hitch, and max. implement weight.

Each tractor manufacturer may have their own standard for when they install a CAT 1,2,or 3 hitch that may vary slightly from the HP ratings listed above.

If you buy a CAT 2 or 3 tractor, all your implements will need the lift arm pins changed to adapt to the new hitch, or buy sleeve bushings that slide on to the CAT 1 pins so they will fit a CAT 2 hitch.

In addition to the link pin sizes there is a difference in the triangle on the front of the implement. That is the "Frame" the tractor linkage attaches to, bigger tractors it has to be bigger and smaller has to be smaller. For Cat 1 as we use on the TE and TO tractors the lower link pins have to be 26" apart and the top link pin 18.5" from the centre (in working position)of the lower link pin to the centre of the top link pin otherwise certainly with the Ferguson it can cause problems with the draft control and also it wont keep the front of the tractor on the floor if it is wrong when working. Dual category implements you must be careful to get the 3 point linkage set to the correct dimensions or you will have trouble, the usual problem with these is that you attach the top link in the wrong hole (too high)and the draft control doesn't work as it should and the front is off the floor a lot of the time.

The difference in the catagories of hitches is in the size of the pins. Every Ferguson I've ever seen or heard of had a catagory I 3-point hitch.

Catagory II is generally for tractors of maybe 90 HP up to 150 or so. (Although it varies) Catagory III hitches generally are for tractors over 150 HP.

The person you talked to may have been confused by the fact that there are REALLY small implements for garden tractors that use a catagory 0 (zero) hitch size - Even smaller than catagory I.

look to the left under r&specs. cat1 was the ford-ferguson 1939(9n)to the 1942(2n)to the1948(8n).the ferguson te&to20&30&35& massey 50 plus others in this size.
