I have a 1958 TO-35. I tried the brush hog today and could not get the two stage to disengage so i could put the PTO in gear. It would just grind. The clutch seems fine otherwise and free play is adjusted correctly. Any help??? Thanks to all replies in advance...

You will have to check the clearance on the second stage through the hatch underneath in the clutch housing. In between each lever for the main clutch there is a setscrew with a lock nut that screws into the cast plate that is part of the second clutch, the clearance should be .090" but as everything will be worn it maybe necessary to reduce this clearance to get it to work, try reducing it by .005" each time on all three screws, until it clears, you should not go less that .065" clearance and you should not take the clearance down more than .005" at one time. Do first make sure that the clearance for the clutch pedal at the point under the footrest is just 3/8", no more, no less. If you need more information regarding the clutch, email me and I will send it. Never ride with your foot on the clutch pedal as it causes bearing wear and allows it to slip a little if the tractor bounces because then so does your foot. If the pedal feels "odd" on the second stage, it could be that the clutch plate lining has broken up and a piece has got trapped between the plate and the flywheel, so it will never stop driving. If this has happened you have to remove the clutch to repair it. But if you wish email me first with what you find before you start to strip it down for repair. When you take up the drive always have it idling when you engage gear and don't have too much throttle on when you start to drive the machine as it wears the clutch unnecessarily. If it is hard to start the machine don't let the clutch in quickly so it snatches or you may break something expensive.

When you disengage the 2nd stage of the clutch, wait about 1/2 minute before you engage the PTO so you don't get gear grinding.
