TO-35 Power steering ball nut failure

I have replaced the PWR steering shaft assembly three times in as many years. Now I hear those balls escaping from the return tube again. I try to be easy on the steering force and have carefully adjusted nut travel, sector mesh, hydraulic pressure&valving and bell washer torque per manual. Still the balls are binding. Would like to avoid buying another shaft assembly since only the tin tubes are damaged.

Does Anybody know what is causing this problem?
Anyone know where to buy ball nut parts like return tubes only?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hi Alex,

Yikes! Three times. I had to replace mine once (so far) a couple of years ago, and those assemblies aren't cheap- not to mention the replacement effort.
Hopefully Big Dean or John(UK) or others will deliver some insight.
Good luck!

Roger

Thanks for the reply,
It's encouraging to hear your installation was successful with one of these shafts from China. Maybe the problem is not enough power assist. Pressure meets spec. but I think the power feels lower than before.

We only had problems with the transfer tubes when the tractor was fitted with a loader and no power steering. From what you say the pressure on your power steering is too low, to test it you should pull at the rim of the steering wheel and it should be no more than 2 - 2-1/2 lbs if it is more than this it confirms that the steering needs resetting. I have the Service Information you need to do that and Sparex has all the usual parts for this steering available. If you want this information, email me at:-

and tell me what you need again....John
PS regarding the transfer tubes, lots of tractors use the same ones, if they have ball/nut steering, try a wreckers yard for a shaft for any of that type.

It must be the power assist then. There is no way it could pass that test. Tractor has loader attachment as well. I will borrow a neighbor's full shop manual and get up to speed on the system. More questions to follow. Thanks for sharing your valuable experience.
