I used my TO-20 the other day for the first time in a couple of months. I noticed that when I had the three point hitch all the way up (I had a 6' blade on it)that there was a rattling or clattering sound. Push in the clutch and the noise stopped. No noise with the blade down. No noise in the trans or anything with PTO off. I checked the trans/hydraulic oil and it was okay. Just changed it this spring. My thought was maybe a PTO bearing was going south. Or the hydraulic pump. Am I on the right track here? Any suggestions really appreciated..... .P

The noise will just be due to the wear between the individual components of the Pump, some do tend to do this under high pressure. The only other things that could contribute to the noise is if you have filled it with the wrong oil. It should be GL1 90W which is as thick as engine oil or 15W-30 Multi-grade, this is good if you are in a cold winter climate as it wont get as thick as GL1. Only those oils will do, any other is wrong refuse any other oil that may be offered to you as a replacement.

With the piston type hydraulic pump you'll hear the pump labor (rattle) when there is pressure on it in the upward position. When it reaches the end of it's travel or the full up position the relief valve should kick out and the rattle sound should quit. As Fred said re-aglinment of the pump may correct some of this, but you're gonna hear the pump working more depending on how much weight your lifting. When you push in your clutch will your lift stay up? or go down? You could have bad rings in your lift cylinder. That's easy to check by taking the side covers off and checking for hyd. oil leaking from the lift cylinder.

I have an F-40 that does that sometimes, but it lifts a large round bale just fine, and otherwise no problems, so I just ignore it.

I think most everyone that has owned an old Ford or Ferguson has experienced this at one time or another. I asked a knowledgeable tractor dealer about it years ago and he said that I shouldn"t be concerned with it...he went on describing that if you loosen the pump and slide it one way or another (I forget which way) that might quiet it some. My opinion...run her. Fred OH
