I had a problem with the clutch grabbing which is being fixed. I noticed there is considerable play in the differential that makes the clutch grabbing feel more harsh. Is this play normal and only a clutch problem? . Ring gear lash is okay. Play likely in the spider gears.

Alex, Hello, I had the very same problem after i let my dad run the tractor logging in mud. To make a long story short, he got the clutch so hot that the spring cushoned lining thats on one side of the disk to take the slack out of the gears before it completely engaged collapsed. (to35) . When i got it home the clutch grabbed bad and you couldn't start out with out the gears cracking. I replaced the disk with another cushoned type , replaced the pilot and throw out berg. for preventive maintance and it was good as new and quiet.-That was 20 years ago. Hope this helps,I wouldn't replace the pressure plate unless it shows damage or you have a lot of money (LOL)-ed

Have you been using the correct oil in the Gearbox and Hydraulics, it could be the thrust washers on the pinions in the Diff. if you have used GL5 type it will corrode the yellow metals and corrode the washers. The play in the diff.is not normal. You can adjust the Ring Gear and pinion clearance slightly providing they are not worn. The backlash should be .008 - .016 and the clearance between the thrust block and the Ring Gear is .013" - .020"
