I finished rebuilding the oil pump on my TO-30 yesterday. Once apart the only signs of wear were on the internal gears and the relief valve, which had score marks and rather heavy wear on one side, and the relief valve spring, which was pretty sagged out. I did not replace the drive gear since it appeared to have minimal wear and appeared to be of a better material than the cast replacement. Once buttoned up the oil pressure went from @7psi hot to about 25psi. An easy afternoon repair for the mechanically inclined, the most time consuming part being the scraping off the old gasket material from the block and pan mating surfaces. I was curious though, the oil pan had no sludge in it at all, and the inside of the block was clean as could be. Also, when shining a light up into the cylinder bores there were no signs of galling or sleeve wear. It sort of surprised me given the age (53) of the engine, but I am not complaining :) -Lee

Your inspection findings are indicative of good care. The lack of sludge indicates regular oil changes with detergent oil being used. I'm not surprised that no "galling" was evident in that is not usually seen in cylinders. They are more prone to scoring from broken rings and just plain wear that is not readily visible. The fact the your oil, pressure came up to 25 psi is indicative of "normal" clearances in the main bearings.
After reading your post, I wonder how many people have replaced bearings AND rebuilt the oil pump when only the latter was necessary.

I was remiss in not thanking GShadel and JohnUK for pointing me in the right direction on this one. Thinking about what I found when I tore it down I really feel the relief valve and spring were the main culprits here. Makes one wonder how many low pressure continentals would be much happier with this simple fix.
