I re-built my pump 2 years ago with all new parts. I was useing it yesterday with a blade moveing dirt when I noticed the pump makeing alot of knocking noise. When I put my hand on the side of the rearend housing I can feel it. It sounds louder when it's trying to hold a certain position, but even does it when all the way up too. I've always been able to hear the pump while engaged, but not like this. The blade is pretty heavy, but I've always used it with out any problems before. I haven't noticed it makeing this sound on my lighter implements. I use GL-1 oil and it was at operating temp. while makeing this noise.

If the knocking began suddenly, you may want to ave a look inside the belly before you use it anymore. I've seen the scotch yokes in the pump break before. You should be able to check it out through the inspection covers without pulling the pump, but it would be easier to see what's going on with the oil drained.

It is quite common for the Pumps to make this knocking noise, it will be some wear on the cam blocks, nothing to worry about. When it is holding pressure it will do it and when as you say it is lifting. Does the implement drop rapidly when you switch off the engine, if it does it most likely will be the check valve leaking (could also be the Relief valve too) and that will allow it to make a noise too because the weight is always on the hydraulics and never actually in hold position. Making a louder noise with a heavy implement would be expected.
