Well, after rebuilding almost every other part of my very, very tired TO20, I figured it would be wrong somehow to roll it out of the shop for the first time all year with known worn spindle bushings, so I tore the front end down. The bushings AND spindles were trashed. I ordered in a new set and when I started cleaning the hubs up tonight, I found the wheel bearings had about had it too. No problem there, but I'm concerned about the seals. I had already bought new seals and I test fit them in the hubs. If I'm understanding these things right, They're supposed to be a tight fit on the spindle and the hub is supposed to rotate over them, yes? Well if that's the case, then I've got issues. My hubs have a groove worn in them in the seal location and it fits loosely into the hubs. Is there a conventional press-in seal that will fit the hubs or has someone found another solution to this problem? (sigh) I've poured so much money into this pile of junk that I could have bought a much nicer tractor to start with. Every time I think I've about got it whipped, something else comes up. I've owned it for a year and a half and never even driven it! Oh, well. Thanks in advance for any advice!

I have a 9N the wheel seals were spinning in the hubs. That was real fun PITA!! Where the seals slide into the hub you will notice is a metal edge.
Correct?
You do own a pair of side cutter pliers right?
Grasp the edge of the seal and put small raised ridges along the edge. Your hub will now grag onto the raised edges of the seals and work for the next bunch of years. Keep the bearings adjusted to prevent the seals from wobbling out again.

The seals should be a tight fit in the hub, this is what holds them in place. The seal rolls over the spindle If the hub is worn, really you should replace the Hub, if the wear isn't too bad you could salvage the hubs by sticking the seals in the hub for now using Loc-tite or similar. You are going to have to replace the Hub next time so you may get away with it for now. Pack the hub with grease and if it has an oil filler plug fitted replace that with a grease nipple so you can top it up. The problem you have is caused by the bearings having worn and left to "wobble" on the axle without being checked and adjusted. The trouble you can get with buying a second-hand tractor is that you can run into all kinds of problems like you have, you can't check everything when you go to buy it, but once you have it finished I am sure that you will feel that at least you have accomplished something with all the work you have put into it, plus you know that it is right now, having done it yourself. Make sure you fit the seals in the Hub the correct way with the "lip" outwards.

John,
I"m sure my TE wheel seals are "back to front" - ie sit on axle & run against hub - or is that just a dust seal? Can"t remember.

Hi Clifford,I just checked the Service Manual to make sure that I wasn't having one of those "senior moments" again and it is correct, the lip goes out. But I do understand you questioning that point as I always have to think about it. In this instance we want to keep the dirt out not so much keep the oil/grease in, if the lip was the other way around there would be a small chance of dirt entering the hub but it would keep the oil in for sure..... That's what I've got here. I'd think that a regular automotive seal would fit. Guess I'll have to scrounge through the shelves at the local parts store to see.
