lift drop

From my previous posts about picking up round bales---
When the tractor lifts medium weight items like the bush hog or box blade the lift arms hold position for several minutes before settling, but those 5x6 bales will go from full lift to the ground in about 10 seconds or so. Makes me wonder what needs a rebuild. Also, if I do tear into the hydraulics is there a complete kit to service the ram and control valve and pump or do I need to order pieces and parts? I figure after 50 years there is no point in half doing a rebuild if necessary.

You need to find out where it is leaking before you try to repair it, if it holds up as you say for several minutes there isn't much wrong with it. As you told me when you lift those bales the pressure was right up and I told you that you are at max pressure that it can develop. One thing that may allow it to drop is the check valve on the end of the relief valve, if this is worn it will allow high pressure to pass the through the valve and back into the reservoir. If it were a gasket, usually it would be dropping all the time but as it only drops when loaded to absolute maximum you could also check the piston rings on the Ram Cylinder in the top. Take off the side cover and watch for leaks under load. No use stripping it down until you locate the leak. You can buy a kit for the pump and bits for the Ram Cylinder. Even if the Pump is worn it will still work and it wont cause the hydraulics to drop like that. Think of it this way, you are building pressure ok but losing it when the Pump isn't running...so it isn't the Pump. Why would you want hold the load on the tractor without the engine running anyway, it was never made to do that,it can cause the Control Valve to stick. It is sensible to lower the load to the ground when you stop the engine, for safety if nothing else.

Thanks John, will pull the cover tomorrow. I never shut the tractor off with that much loaded but having the bale sink quickly can make it entertaining to go from gear to neutral to gear again while opening pasture gates :)
Must keep up appearances and driving off into the field with the bale resting comfortably on the ground instead of on the spear might make my horses raise a few eyebrows.
